Endocrinology and Metabolism

Brief Description

The rotation is designed to provide experience in the diagnosis and management of patients with endocrinologic abnormalities, including diabetes mellitus.

Objectives

At the end of the rotation, the student should have achieved the following: an approach to the diagnosis and management of patients with a wide variety of endocrine problems; experience in the management of patients with Type I, Type II, and gestational diabetes mellitus.

Learning Experience

The students experience in Endocrinology and Metabolism will come from working in multiple clinics at Bassett Hospital. The exposure to diabetes mellitus will be through eight clinics per week, as well as a seventh clinic for women with pregnancy and diabetes. An opportunity will be provided to work with the Diabetes Nurse/Educator and Dietitian during the instruction of diabetic patients. Endocrine clinic meets daily with an additional 1/2 day clinic, coordinated with an Endocrine surgeon, for patients with thyroid and parathyroid abnormalities. Students will also be able to observe thyroid and parathyroid surgery. Inpatient consults will provide further exposure to endocrine problems along with exposure to our service where expertise in the management of blood glucoses will be covered through consultations and daily rounds.

Feedback

The students’ evaluation and treatment of patients is reviewed daily by the attending physician.

Evaluation

Based on presentations and interactions with attending physicians. A single half-hour oral presentation will be required. There is no examination.

Data

Given all year except for January, June and July, in one month blocks based on availability. Maximum number of fourth year students per month: One. Housing is provided, if available. Conferences to be attended: Weekly lectures on Endocrine topics.
