Meet Our Leaders in Heart Care
Michael Holmes, MD
Chief of Cardiology
Dr. Holmes is fellowship trained in cardiovascular disease and has been practicing cardiology for over 25 years. He has served as the Chief of Cardiology for Bassett Healthcare Network since April 2022.
Dr. Holmes holds a medical degree from John Hopkins University, School of Medicine in Baltimore, MD. He completed his residency and a fellowship in cardiovascular disease at the University of Vermont College of Medicine in Burlington, VT.
John Kelley, MD
Director of Cardiac Surgery
Dr. Kelley is a cardiac surgeon with over 30 years of experience. He and his surgical team perform open-heart surgery and provide surgical treatments to patients with a variety of conditions including heart defects, blocked arteries, damaged heart valves, and irregular heartbeats.
Dr. Kelley earned his medical degree from the University of Vermont College of Medicine in Burlington, Vermont. He completed residences in surgery at both Waterbury Hospital Health Center and the Medical College Hospital of Vermont, as well as a residency in Cardiothoracic Surgery at Albany Medical Center Hospital.
Anthony Nappi, MD
Director of Interventional Cardiology
Dr. Nappi is a fellowship trained interventional cardiologist with 18 years of experience. He and his team treat conditions related to the heart and blood vessels. They provide minimally invasive procedures in which a thin, flexible tube called a catheter is inserted into a blood vessel to address blockages. These procedures often result in less discomfort and faster recovery times than other treatment options.
Dr. Nappi earned a medical degree from St. George's University School of Medicine in Grenada and completed his residency at SUNY Upstate University Hospital in Syracuse, NY. He completed fellowships at Albany Medical Center in Albany, NY and Tufts New England Medical Center in Boston, MA.
Evan Adelstein, MD
Director of Electrophysiology
Dr. Adelstein is the most recent addition to Bassett’s cardiac leadership team, bringing 18 years of experience as a cardiologist. Dr. Adelstein leads the electrophysiology (EP) team – which identifies and treats electrical malfunctions of the heart using defibrillators, pacemakers, electrocardiograms (EKGs), and other devices. These types of heart problems can cause irregular heartbeats, heart palpitations, or fainting episodes.
Dr. Adelstein earned his medical degree from Georgetown University School of Medicine in Washington, D.C. and completed residency at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, PA. He completed fellowships in Cardiac Electrophysiology & Cardiovascular Disease at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center in Pittsburgh, PA.
Heart Care You Can Trust
Medical Cardiology
Bassett’s medical cardiology team treats patients for a variety of heart conditions including cardiac arrest, heart disease, heart attack, heart failure, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol. They also offer preventative heart care, and diagnostic heart services such as EKGs, stress tests, CT scans, and MRIs. They can also connect patients with other heart care services such as cardiac surgery, interventional cardiology, electrophysiology (EP), and cardiac rehabilitation. You can rely on our heart care specialists to provide you with the best heart care possible.
Heart Surgery & Minimally Invasive Procedures
If you are experiencing chest pain or pressure, fatigue, shortness of breath, or have a history of heart disease — Bassett’s cardiologists can evaluate you and recommend treatments. These may include minimally invasive heart surgery or more complex cardiac surgery, including open-heart surgery. These may be necessary to help open or bypass blocked arteries, replace damaged heart valves, or correct arrhythmias.
Our cardiology team also offers interventional cardiology procedures. These minimally invasive heart procedures involve inserting a small tube, called a catheter, into your heart or a blood vessel to resolve your heart problem. With this type of procedure, your recovery time is quicker and less painful than with open heart surgery.
Electrophysiology
Your heart is regulated by electrical impulses that signal the heart to beat in a certain rhythm. When the rhythm is interrupted it causes an irregular heartbeat pattern known as Atrial fibrillation (AFib) or an Arrhythmia. Our electrophysiologists are cardiologists who can identify and treat these electrical malfunctions of the heart using defibrillators, pacemakers, electrocardiograms (EKGs), and other devices.
Cardiac Rehabilitation
If your heart procedure requires cardiac rehabilitation, you can count on our specially trained team to oversee your rehabilitation program to help you recover, rebuild your strength, and reduce the risk of future heart-related issues. We’re here to help you resume your normal, active life as soon as possible.
Our Cardiac Team
Our leadership team is supported by a team of highly qualified practitioners and advanced practice clinicians. Together, providing you with heart care you can trust.
