URMC Tobacco Cessation Program

Nicotine-Replacement Therapies with Text-Message Support

Nicotine-Replacement Therapies with Text-Message Support

We partner with URMC Wilmont Cancer Institute to provide our patients with access to their tobacco cessation program.

This program begins with an initial 30-minute phone consultation. Their team will listen to your concerns, learn about any previous attempts to quit and identify treatment preferences. From this consultation, a personalized treatment plan will be created.

The URMC Tobacco Cessation Program includes:

  • Preferred nicotine replacement therapies (e.g., nicotine patches, gum, and lozenges) will be mailed to your home – free of charge.
  • Available in English and Spanish.
  • Text-messaging program - live Tobacco Treatment Specialist checks text messages and offers support.

Nicotine replacement therapies such as gum, patches, inhalers, prescription medications in combination with cessation counseling is the most effective path to successful quitting.

Dangers of Smoking / Using Tobacco

Smoking and tobacco use harm nearly every organ in your body. Quitting is one of the most important steps you can take to improve your health — at any age.

  • Cancer: Smoking is the leading cause of lung cancer and is strongly linked to oral cancer, as well as cancers of the throat, esophagus, bladder, pancreas, and more.
  • Heart Disease & Stroke: Tobacco use damages blood vessels, increasing your risk of heart attack and stroke.
  • Lung Damage: Smoking can cause chronic lung diseases like chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), making it harder to breathe over time.
  • Addiction: Nicotine is highly addictive, making quitting difficult without support.
  • Weakened Immune System: Smokers are more likely to get sick and take longer to recover.
  • Persistent cough and shortness of breath
  • Reduced energy and stamina
  • Gum disease, tooth loss, and bad breath
  • Premature aging of the skin
  • Secondhand smoke exposes family, friends, and coworkers to many of the same harmful chemicals, increasing their risk of respiratory illness, heart disease, and cancer.
