Early Detection Through Regular Screenings

Regular screenings help detect cancer in its earliest stages. Using advanced screening technology, we can identify abnormalities and begin treatment before cancer progresses. The Bassett Healthcare Network of primary and specialty care practitioners offer screenings throughout our network, as well as through our mobile cancer screening coach.

If you haven’t been screened before or are overdue for a screening, we encourage you to schedule an appointment with your primary care practitioner, or self-refer yourself through our Cancer Services Program, which provides these services to underinsured and uninsured men and women who qualify. Based on your medical and family history, the specialty and primary care practitioners at Bassett Healthcare Network can advise on which cancer screenings you should consider receiving.

Testing for Cancer

Depending on the specific type of cancer, our primary care practitioners and specialists may use different screening methods. The general types of cancer tests we offer include:

  • Physical examination
  • Lab tests
  • Imaging exams, such as X-rays, CT scans, and MRIs
  • Genetic testing
  • Biopsy procedures

Our specific cancer screenings include:

Cancer Screening Criteria

Your primary care physician or practitioner may recommend getting screened regularly for certain cancers, such as colon and breast cancer, based on the following criteria:

  • Age
  • Prior medical history
  • Ethnicity
  • Lifestyle habits
  • Existing health conditions
  • Presence of cancer in family members

At Bassett Healthcare Network, everyone can be screened for cancer regardless of income. Our Cancer Services Program makes breast, cervical, and colorectal cancer screenings available for uninsured and underinsured individuals who qualify through our nearly 70 partnerships with non-Bassett Healthcare Network providers across the region.
