Pharmacy Residency FAQs

Residents will participate in a boards prep series throughout the first few months of the residency (schedule and structure TBD). This will be part of planned requirements and built into the resident schedule, not an extra assignment.

Yes, Bassett hosts various APPE and IPPE rotations throughout the year. The pharmacy department also participates in various interprofessional didactic education, including grand rounds.

Bassett offers a more intimate learning environment where residents will really get to know the people they work with. Building these interprofessional relationships fosters collaboration and growth.

A pharmacist graduating from an ASHP-accredited PGY-1 program is eligible to pursue PGY-2 training and / or board certification. Graduates will also be equipped to fill clinical pharmacist positions in a variety of patient care settings.

Residents will participate quality improvement projects, committee work, patient care initiatives, and more. There will be presentations and other learning activities periodically assigned for the benefit of the resident and other staff.

Pre-candidate status is provided to new residency programs upon successful application with ASHP, allowing them to participate in the match for residency recruitment. Upon successful recruitment, the program applies to enter candidate status. This officially designates the program has a resident in training and has submitted an initial accreditation application. Upon graduating the first residency class, ASHP will perform an official site survey and evaluation for accreditation. If approved, the program’s accreditation is retroactive to the date of the application. A resident who completes a PGY-1 pharmacy program in candidate status is eligible for subsequent PGY-2 residency training.

If extenuating circumstances require a late program start, the program can be extended to fulfill the graduation requirements. This does not apply to situations where a resident’s start or progression is delayed due to a failed licensing exam attempt.

The specific nature of these projects will depend on the needs of the health-system and the interests of the resident. The resident’s primary research project will be selected with the ultimate goal of publication.
