Why Choose Bassett?

The Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital is re-starting and re-vamping a PGY-1 pharmacy residency program, in pre-candidate status through ASHP. Our previous long-standing pharmacy residency ran for 30 years, from 1978 to 2008. In fact, one of the last graduates from our previous program, Amanda Winans, PharmD, BCPS, CACP, is one of our new preceptors!

We are a unique rural health delivery network comprised of numerous hospital and clinic locations dedicated to patient care, teaching, and research throughout the region. Our approach to patient care is comprehensive and progressive, with many opportunities for pharmacy growth and expansion. Pharmacy residents will support and innovate on these advanced pharmacy practice models to develop even more sustainable services.

Our Residency at a Glance

  • Competitive stipend, benefits, and vacation policies
  • A well-rounded experience to launch graduating residents into any career path
  • Layered learning with IPPE and APPE students
  • Flexible staffing model

This program is designed to build upon the Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) education and outcomes to develop pharmacists who are accountable and responsible for medication-related care of patients with a wide range of conditions. Graduates will be eligible for board certification and postgraduate year two (PGY-2) residency training. Throughout the residency year, residents will develop competency across the four required ASHP outcome domains: patient care; advancing practice and improving patient care; leadership and management; and teaching, education, and dissemination of knowledge.

The residency is a 12-month, full-time program aligned with ASHP accreditation standards. The year combines block (required) learning experiences with longitudinal experiences that span the duration of the residency. Residents progress from close preceptor direction toward increasing independence, with performance evaluated through ASHP's competency-based, criteria-referenced framework and documented in PharmAcademic.

As a rural health delivery network, our program offers residents a distinctive vantage point on the challenges and opportunities of delivering high-quality pharmacy care across geographically dispersed hospital and clinic sites. Residents gain experience bridging inpatient and ambulatory care, addressing access barriers common to rural populations, and leveraging technology and collaborative practice models to extend pharmacy services. Rather than maintaining established programs alone, residents actively contribute to the design, implementation, and refinement of expanding pharmacy services, gaining real-world experience in building sustainable, scalable models of care.

Each resident is supported by a residency program director (RPD), a team of qualified preceptors, and an individualized development plan. At program entry and throughout the year, the RPD and resident use entering interests, self-assessment, and ongoing evaluations to customize the schedule and future elective development so that the experience aligns with the resident's individual goals — whether pursuing board certification, PGY2 training, or clinical, operational, academic, or leadership careers.

Program Goals & Career Outcomes

Our foundational goals are to prepare residents to be eligible and competitive for board certification and PGY-2 residency training. Upon successful completion of the program, residents will be prepared to:

  • Provide safe, effective, evidence-based, and patient-centered medication therapy management as an integral member of interprofessional teams
  • Advance pharmacy practice and improve patient care through service development, quality improvement, and research
  • Demonstrate leadership and practice-management skills
  • Educate patients, caregivers, health professionals, students, and the public, and disseminate knowledge
  • Be eligible and competitive for board certification, PGY-2 training, and independent practice

Beyond these outcomes, a core aspiration of our program is to grow and strengthen the pharmacy department through our residents. We are invested in developing new and expanded pharmacy services and in cultivating pharmacists who are equipped to lead them. We would welcome the opportunity to retain graduates as members of our pharmacy team and see the residency as a pathway to a long-term career within our network.

At the same time, we are fully committed to supporting each resident's individual goals, including the pursuit of PGY-2 training or positions elsewhere that best align with their professional aspirations. Our aim is to prepare residents so well that they are competitive for any path they choose — and to make remaining with our organization an attractive option.
