PET CT Scans

A PET scan, also known as Positron emission tomography (PET), is an imaging study that can see the functioning of an organ or tissue within the body. A CT scan, also known as computed tomography (CT) scan, or CAT scan, can show the body in 3D, or slices. Our PET scanner has a CT scanner built-in.

A PET/CT scan can see changes at the cellular level and may detect a disease early before it can be seen on other imaging studies. Bassett Healthcare Network’s radiologists will decide which type of scan is most appropriate for your health care problem.

Preparing for a PET/CT Scan

PET/CT is considered a nuclear study, which means you will have a small amount of radioactive material, so that a clear image can be obtained. The contrast material may be injected, swallowed, or inhaled as a gas. The material will lose radioactivity naturally over time. Drinking water will help flush the material from your body. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, you should talk to your doctor before having a PET/CT scan.

On the day of the scan, you should:

  • Wear comfortable clothing
  • Leave jewelry and valuables at home
  • Do not eat or drink as instructed by your doctor

The test is painless but it is important you remain still throughout the scan. The length of the scan will depend on the reason for the testing.
