Leadership is a Choice

Considerations

Leadership is an important skill for residents. Improved teamwork has been shown to be associated with decreased medical errors and improved performance. Fostering leadership and other non-technical skills may lead to more successful team structures.

Yearly Plan

  • We will meet once per month, on Sundays, for two hours.
  • Location and lunch: Fenimore Art Museum.
  • Books provided.
  • This will be an intentional 10-month workshop where residents will:
    • Choose a leadership quality or skill that they want to improve on.
    • Meet once per month from September to June for two hours.
    • Receive a certificate and a letter documenting their participation for their residency file.

Requirements & Expectations

  • Residents will apply for this workshop.
  • Five residents will be chosen to participate.
  • Attendance and participation expectations: residents will be excused from clinical duties during this time.

Result

After completing this workshop, participants will have developed a better understanding of why, when, and how to lead, and they will know how to build a personal path to effective leadership in all aspects of their lives as surgeons.
