Bassett Welcomes Infectious Disease Specialist

Dr. Suthanya Sornprom, an infectious disease specialist, recently joined the Bassett Healthcare Network.

She primarily sees patients at Cobleskill Regional Hospital. She also treats patients at Bassett Medical Center and A.O. Fox Hospital on a limited basis.

Infectious disease covers a broad range of illnesses, including urinary tract infection, pneumonia, bloodstream infection, bone and joint infection, Meningitis, Diverticulitis, C.difficile infection, COVID-19, Tuberculosis, as well as tick-borne illnesses, such as Lyme disease.

“Cobleskill Hospital is especially fortunate to have Dr. Sornprom on staff. Her expertise in infectious diseases adds more capabilities to our practice which now offers 24 specialties of all kinds. This makes it more convenient for our patients in Schoharie County to get the medical care they need with less travel,” said Dr. Joyce Burton, inpatient medical director of Cobleskill Regional Hospital.

Dr. Sornprom joined Dr. Deborah Sentochnik and Dr. Charles Hyman in the infectious disease division of Bassett Medical Center in September 2020. “The excellent training I received from Dr. Sentochnik and Dr. Hyman is one reason I chose to return to Bassett,” she said.

Her mother suggested she become a doctor for the opportunity to help people.  She came to U.S. seven years ago to continue her medical training. Her goal was to train at highly-reputable institutions that integrate the most up-to-date science to provide excellent care to patients.

She completed her three-year residency at Bassett Medical Center in 2017. She earned a doctor of medicine degree from Mahidol University, Ramathibodhi Hospital, in Bangkok, Thailand in 2009.

She completed an infectious disease fellowship program at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, New Hampshire. She also completed a leadership and preventive medicine residency and Master of Public Health from Dartmouth. Her practice and research have focused on Clostridium difficile, Diverticulitis, and Meningitis.

Dr. Sornprom also specializes in the care of HIV patients and treats patients admitted in the Short-Stay Rehabilitation Program at Cobleskill Regional Hospital for long-term use of antibiotics.
