Bassett Medical Center has earned a prestigious three-year recognition as an Anticoagulation Center of Excellence from the Anticoagulation Forum. This illustrates Bassett Medical Center’s strong commitment to providing the highest level of care to patients taking antithrombotic medications (medicines that work to prevent or break down blood clots).
Coagulation is another word for blood clotting, the process through which blood turns solid after an injury to prevent blood loss. This is an important part of healing and clots typically dissolve naturally once an injury has healed. However, abnormal clotting can result in a number of health issues, including pain, swelling, reduced blood flow, sudden shortness of breath, heart attack, or stroke. Antithrombotic medications are prescribed to those who have experienced or are at risk of experiencing abnormal blood clotting to prevent or break down any clots that might form.
“We are very proud to have passed the Anticoagulation Centers of Excellence assessment, proving Bassett Medical Center’s dedication to actively participating in all aspects of care for patients taking an antithrombotic medication,” said Amanda Winans, PharmD, Supervisor of Ambulatory Clinical Pharmacy and the Anticoagulation Management Service for Bassett Healthcare Network.
“The multifaceted contributions of our anticoagulation management service and anticoagulation stewardship program have been instrumental in optimizing patient safety and efficacy,” explains Anush Patel, MD, FACP, Chief of Medical Oncology and Hematology and Medical Director of Anticoagulation Services and Stewardship for Bassett Healthcare Network.
“The education gained through this program is sure to have a lasting and profound effect on the care that we provide,” said Fady Abdelmalek, PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist for the Anticoagulation Clinic at Bassett Healthcare Network.
Through its Centers of Excellence assessment and resource center, the Anticoagulation Forum offers a roadmap to consistent and sustainable care, helping medical teams streamline operational performance, improve transition of care and knowledge of drug therapy, and enhance patient education while learning more about disease state management.
The Anticoagulation Forum is a multidisciplinary non-profit organization that works to improve the quality of care for patients taking antithrombotic medications. It promotes the clinical application of evidence-based practices, and provides education and networking opportunities for healthcare professionals.
Bassett Medical Center is now recognized as an Anticoagulation Center of Excellence from 2026 through 2029.
