Key Clinical Role Will Focus on Optimizing Surgical Services across the Health System

Bassett Healthcare Network is pleased to announce that Luis Oceguera, MD, has been named the network’s Operating Rooms Medical Director, an adjunct responsibility that will complement his current role as Bassett Healthcare Network’s Chief of Surgery.

In this new role, Oceguera will have full oversight of all operating rooms across Bassett Healthcare Network. His work will focus on determining the best use of staffing, equipment, and supplies to achieve Bassett’s strategic goals for surgical access and volumes.

“It’s a challenging role,” says Oceguera. “But with the support of my fellow leaders in surgical services, we can make a difference in how we better meet the needs of our patients.” Oceguera will work closely with key clinical stakeholders across the health system to achieve performance improvement goals.

Oceguera has many long-standing ties with nurse leaders, physician chiefs, and practitioners throughout Bassett, and those relationships will be important to understanding the opportunities for improvements throughout the system. “I started at Bassett as a surgical resident and recently hit my 20-year milestone,” he says. “I have worked closely with many Bassett colleagues over the years and together we’ve made key improvements to surgery services, but I am equally excited in this new role to lead the next generation of change as we add new surgeons to our Bassett team.”

“I have known Luis for many years, and he exemplifies what makes Bassett special,” stated Dr. Henry Weil, Chief Clinical and Academic Officer of Bassett Healthcare Network and President of Bassett Medical Center. “He is a skilled surgeon who is compassionate, mission-driven, and leads with integrity. Placing him in this pivotal role will work because he has the respect of his colleagues and the personal motivation to ensure our patients get the quality care they deserve.”

Oceguera is a graduate of Loma Linda University School of Medicine in Loma Linda, California. After completing his residency in general surgery at Bassett Medical Center in Cooperstown, he pursued a fellowship in colon and rectal surgery at Indiana University School of Medicine.

Oceguera lives in Cooperstown with his wife, Dr. Stephanie Oceguera, who specializes in bariatric surgery and practices at Bassett, and their daughter, Isabelle.
