Amanda Winans, PharmD, Supervisor of Ambulatory Clinical Pharmacy for Bassett Healthcare Network, has been named a Preceptor of the Year by the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy (AACP) for 2025. She was nominated for this award by Binghamton University.

A preceptor is a practicing professional who takes on the added responsibilities of supervising, teaching, and mentoring students during their clinical education. Dr. Winans has been precepting students for over 17 years.

“I thoroughly enjoy being a preceptor. I help students develop the knowledge and skills gained during time spent in the classroom through robust hands-on learning. Being preceptors forces us as clinicians to remain current with evidence and practice as well as our teaching skills,” said Dr. Winans. “There is so much to be gained through the student-preceptor relationship. It’s a win-win for both.”

Students in their final year of study for their Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) degree complete rotations with preceptors. The students learn how to perform basic tasks while developing the professionalism, communication, and social skills that are an integral part of the patient care process. Preceptors also act as mentors who can provide advice to students on their career paths and scholarly or research work.

The AACP awards its Preceptors of the Year with a diploma and two years of complimentary membership in their association, where they can access programming, resources, and tools to enhance their professional development.

Dr. Winans was nominated for this distinction by Binghamton University after she was nominated by School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences students and won the university’s Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experiences (APPE) Ambulatory Care Preceptor of the Year Award. This prestigious, student-nominated distinction reflects the recipient's professionalism, teaching skills, coaching, and patient care.
