Learn More About Dr. Howe

Dr. Adam Howe is a pediatric urologist with extensive training and experience in the full spectrum of urological disorders. His warm approach and passion for quality patient care sets him apart.

In his free time, he likes to spend time outdoors, relax with his family and cats, and is an avid basketball and NY Knicks fan.

Dr. Howe was born and raised in Niskayuna, NY, went to Union College and Albany Medical College for his medical degree. He trained in general surgery at University of Louisville, and then completed his urology residency at The Ohio State University. He then further specialized in pediatric urology with a fellowship in New York City at Cohen Childrens Medical Center (Northwell Health).

Dr. Howe began his career as a pediatric urologist at Albany Medical College, where he practiced for 9 years. He held the role of Associate Professor of Urology and Pediatrics, was the department’s Medical Student Clerkship Director, and trained 37 urology residents. He introduced pediatric robotic surgery to Albany, being the first to bring this skill set to the area. Additionally, he started a pediatric onco-fertility preservation program, and was the go-to urologist for renal transplant collaboration.

Dr. Howe has specialized experience in all aspects of pediatric urology, ranging from in-office circumcisions to minimally-invasive surgeries to more complex genitourinary reconstructive surgeries. He sees mothers for prenatal consultation if imaging is concerning for urologic disorders. He also has ongoing studies treating bed wetting using TENS units as an at-home therapy. Dr. Howe has over 20 peer-reviewed publications, serves on the Society for Pediatric Urology’s Task Force, and was a finalist for the national American Urological Association Teaching Award.

Bringing Specialized Pediatric Urology Care to Our Region

Dr. Howe sees patients with a variety of urology conditions and symptoms, including:

  • Bladder infections (cystitis)
  • Blood in the urine
  • Chronic bed wetting
  • Hydroceles
  • Hydronephrosis
  • Hypospadias
  • Labial & penile anomalies
  • Recurrent urinary tract infections (UTIs)
  • Undescended testicles
  • Ureteral Reflux
  • Congenital abnormalities of the kidney, bladder, and urogenital tract

The Most Common & Advanced Conditions Dr. Howe Treats

Blood in the Urine (Hematuria)

Seeing blood in your child’s urine can be alarming. Causes may include urinary tract infections, kidney stones, structural abnormalities, exercise-related irritation, or other urinary tract conditions.

Ureteral Reflux

Vesicoureteral reflux (VUR), sometimes called urinary or ureteral reflux, occurs when urine flows backward from the bladder toward the kidneys. Left untreated, it can increase the risk of kidney infections and kidney damage.

Recurrent Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs)

Repeated urinary tract infections can affect a child’s comfort and long-term urinary health. Common causes include bladder dysfunction, constipation, urinary reflux, and structural abnormalities of the urinary tract.

Hydronephrosis

Hydronephrosis occurs when urine cannot drain properly from the kidney, causing swelling. It is one of the most common conditions evaluated by pediatric urologists and may be discovered before birth during a prenatal ultrasound or later in childhood.

Advanced Pediatric Urology Procedures

Dr. Howe offers specialized procedures that previously required many families to travel significant distances outside the region including:

  • Bladder augmentation
  • Circumcisions and circumcision revisions
  • Genitourinary reconstructive surgeries
  • Hypospadias repair
  • Pediatric inguinal hernia repairs
  • Penile reconstruction
  • Prenatal consultations for urologic disorders
  • Robotic surgery for kidney anomalies
  • UPJ obstruction treatment (pyeloplasty)
  • Urachal cyst excision
  • Ureteral reimplantation
  • Ureteral stent insertion / exchange / removal

The Most Common & Advanced Procedures Dr. Howe Performs

Circumcisions & Revisions

Circumcisions are one of the most commonly performed pediatric urology procedures. Many circumcisions and circumcision revisions can be completed as an outpatient procedure, allowing children to return home the same day.

Robotic Surgery for Kidney Anomalies

For select conditions, robotic-assisted surgery offers a minimally invasive approach that may result in smaller incisions, reduced discomfort, and faster recovery.

UPJ Obstruction Treatment

A ureteropelvic junction (UPJ) obstruction blocks the flow of urine from the kidney into the ureter. Treatment often involves pyeloplasty, a surgical procedure that restores normal urine drainage and protects kidney function.

Hypospadias Repair

Hypospadias repair corrects a condition where the urinary opening develops on the underside of the penis rather than at the tip. Surgery is performed under general anesthesia and is designed to improve urinary function and normal development.

Ureteral Reimplantation

Ureteral reimplantation is a surgical procedure used to correct urinary reflux and certain urinary tract abnormalities. The procedure helps prevent urine from flowing backward toward the kidneys and reduces the risk of recurrent infections.
