Short Stay Rehabilitation

Short-Stay Rehabilitation

Bassett Healthcare Network offers a variety of short-stay rehabilitation programs in various locations, featuring comprehensive short-term inpatient care for patients who do not require hospitalization at the acute level of care but are not yet ready to recover from an injury or illness at home. Patients and families often turn to these programs immediately following a brief hospital stay or in place of full-scale hospitalization for a major health problem that has worsened.

  • Occupational therapy
  • Speech therapy
  • Respiratory therapy
  • Nursing
  • Nutritional counseling
  • IV (intravenous) therapy
  • Specialized wound care
  • Post-surgical care (including hip and knee replacements)

The term used to describe this type of care is subacute care. Subacute care is goal-oriented. Patients who qualify for this type of care may include those recovering from joint replacement surgery, a stroke, or a fall or injury that required hospitalization. They usually require more skilled nursing care than is generally provided in a nursing home, but only for a short period of time – during which attainable goals are set and achieved.

Our professional staff encourages continuing recovery and assists patients with returning to a more independent level of functioning. We work one-on-one with patients to provide a comprehensive program of rehabilitation.

Patients in our Short-Stay Rehabilitation Program also benefit from the comprehensive resources of our full-service hospital, including on-site radiology and laboratory service, plus access to physician specialists for medically necessary consults related to their specific treatment plan. Physical therapy, speech therapy, and occupational therapy are available five days a week.

The Progressive Care Unit (PCU)

Patients undergoing short-stay rehabilitation also have the option to pursue Progressive Care unique to Cobleskill Regional Hospital, where the strength of the program is our team of highly qualified professionals. Patients receive care from a range of practitioners, including nurses, doctors, nursing assistants, physical therapists, and respiratory, speech, and occupational therapists. They work together to develop an individualized rehabilitation program focused on helping patients heal, regain their independence, and return home.

Family Involvement

The program’s small size gives therapists the chance to get to know patients’ families and involve them in their care plans. Families are encouraged to participate in therapy and all aspects of care. Social interaction is an important part of maintaining motivation, and the bright and comfortable Aggie Scott Activity Room provides a homelike setting for patients and families to share a meal, play a board game, or even enjoy a round of bowling on the Wii system.

About Medicare Coverage

Many of the patients in the Short-Stay Rehabilitation Program are over age 65 and have healthcare coverage through Medicare. In general, patients who qualify for Medicare coverage of short-term rehabilitation:
