Digestive Health

The gastroenterologists at Bassett Healthcare Network work together with surgeons, radiologists, and our cancer care team to help you manage your digestive disease, relieve stomach pain, and achieve optimal digestive health.

Digestive Disorders & Gastrointestinal Diseases

Our gastroenterology team diagnoses and treats a full range of gastrointestinal and digestive diseases, including:

  • Swallowing disorders
  • Acid reflux (GERD)
  • Stomach conditions, including ulcers, inflammation, indigestion, or gastrointestinal cancers
  • Liver diseases, either acute or chronic
  • Biliary tract diseases
  • Pancreatic diseases
  • Small bowel diseases, including malabsorption
  • Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), including ulcerative colitis
  • Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)
  • Colon diseases, including constipation, chronic diarrhea, polyps, or colorectal cancer

Gastrointestinal Disease Diagnosis & Treatments

We perform the following treatments for digestive diseases and disorders:

  • Esophageal manometry (esophageal motility testing) – a test that measures the rhythmic muscle contractions of the esophagus when you swallow. This is done to determine how well your esophagus is working, and to diagnose esophageal disorders or conditions, such as diffuse esophageal spasm, achalasia, or scleroderma
  • Esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD) – an endoscopic procedure that examines the esophagus, stomach, and duodenum. EGD may be used to diagnose conditions that may cause chest pain, abdominal pain, difficulty swallowing, nausea or vomiting, heartburn, intestinal bleeding, or bloody stool
  • Endoscopic retrograde cholangio-pancreatography (ERCP) – an endoscopic procedure that is performed by injecting dye and taking X-rays to diagnose pancreatic or bile duct conditions
  • Endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) – an endoscopic procedure that uses ultrasounds to diagnose the causes of abdominal or chest pain, such as lymphoma, Barrett’s esophagus, bile duct stones, sarcoidosis, pancreatitis or pancreatic cysts, neuroendocrine tumors, or colorectal cancers
  • Hydrogen breath test – a test where the patient blows into a balloon after a 12-hour period of fasting to measure the concentration of hydrogen in the small bowel to help diagnose lactose intolerance and bacterial overgrowth
  • Colonoscopy – an endoscopic procedure that examines the large intestine to evaluate gastrointestinal symptoms, including rectal or intestinal bleeding, or abdominal bleeding. Colonoscopies can also diagnose colorectal cancer or polyps
  • Flexible sigmoidoscopy – an endoscopic procedure that examines the sigmoid colon to screen for colon cancer, or evaluate possible causes of abdominal pain, chronic diarrhea, rectal bleeding, or other intestinal issues. Sigmoidoscopies also allow a tissue sample to be collected for further analysis
