Obstetrics & Maternity Care

Maternal Health Program

Obstetrics refers to health care for new mothers, from the first weeks of pregnancy through the baby’s delivery and postpartum days. Bassett Healthcare Network’s comprehensive maternal health care program includes education, prenatal services, labor and delivery, and neonatal and postpartum care.

Obstetrics

The aim of our obstetrics and maternal care program is to ensure the optimal health of both mother and baby during pregnancy, delivery, and after the baby is born. Our birthing centers at Bassett Healthcare Network are recognized for their “culture of collaboration,” in which our physicians and nurses will work with you to:

  • Evaluate your lifestyle and help you develop a nutrition and exercise plan for a healthy pregnancy
  • Offer advice on family planning
  • Prevent, diagnose, and treat possible conditions, such as gestational diabetes
  • Effectively manage unexpected developments during childbirth, such as lengthy labor
  • Help you create your own individualized birth plan

The Bassett Birthing Center

The birthing center at Bassett Healthcare Network offers every comfort for new mothers and their families:

  • Four Labor/Delivery/Recovery (LDR) rooms, each with a private bath, shower, and spa tub
  • Eight postpartum rooms with refrigerators and fold-out couches
  • Operating rooms for Caesarean births
  • A special care nursery

At Bassett Healthcare Network, the health and safety of you and your baby is our first priority. Our comprehensive maternal health program includes prenatal care and health screenings, educational programs, labor and delivery, and neonatal and postpartum care.

Bassett Birthing Center is staffed by experienced obstetrical nurses, certified nurse-midwives, pediatric nurse practitioners, physician assistants, pediatricians, and OB-GYN hospitalists. Whether a nurse-midwife or hospitalist helps deliver your baby, our philosophy of care remains the same: You create your own birth plans, with minimal intervention, extensive labor support, and open communication as standard. We do not allow a water birth experience based on current ACOG and AAP guidelines.

Each new mother’s needs are discussed and incorporated into birthing plans at Bassett Health. We offer natural birthing options for uncomplicated pregnancies. High-risk pregnancies will receive extra attention and care from our experienced OB-GYNs. We also offer family planning, childbirth classes, and other women’s health services.

As a mother giving birth, you may have three support persons with you during your labor and birth. Upon admission to the Birthing Center you will be given three passes for you to allocate as you choose. All other family members and friends will be asked to wait in our family lounge located just outside of the Birthing Center. If a C-section becomes necessary, you may have one support person accompany you to the operating room. This is subject to approval by the Department of Anesthesia.

We welcome one primary support person to stay with you 24 hours a day for the duration of your postpartum stay. Other visitors are welcome between 10:00 am and 8:00 pm.

Mothers are offered access to our newborn channel during their stay at Bassett Birthing Center, featuring a library of informational videos on topics such as preparing for delivery, breastfeeding, child safety, and more. After their release, mothers can continue viewing the videos at home. Our password is 01635.
