    • An operating room used for cesarean sections located on the unit
    • Special care nursery for newborns needing special attention
    • Eight postpartum rooms, equipped with a private bathroom with shower, refrigerator and fold out couch for one support person to stay overnight

“Our culture in the Birthing Center is one of collaboration,” explained Robin Stasilli, RN. “Our patients are at the center of that collaboration. Our team is here to support them with the goal of having happy and healthy babies.”

    The Bassett Birthing Center

The Birthing Center at Bassett Medical Center is located on the third floor of the inpatient building. We pride ourselves on providing the highest standards of care for women and their new babies. Our experienced staff provide compassionate quality care to ensure a great experience.

Our state of the art Birthing Center allows staff to provide an individualized care approach to each woman. Our staff is experienced and prepared for any type of care required. For women needing a cesarean delivery, the surgery and recovery are also carried out in the Birthing Center. After the birth, mothers will move to a private postpartum room, each with a comfortable space to accommodate mother, baby and family. The unit is fully secured with monitoring of all visitors through our nurse's station and an infant security system to ensure a safe environment.

We are pleased to offer the newborn channel during your inpatient stay. Once you have been discharged home, you can continue to view the channel online at http://www.thenewbornchannelnow.com/. Bassett Medical Center's hospital password is 01635.

    An Experienced Collaborative Team

The Birthing Center has maintained very high patient satisfaction rates. Since it opened, families across the region choose to deliver here because they know that our staff is fully committed to preparing parents for the great joy and challenge of a baby. Meet our team.

Bassett Birthing Center is staffed by experienced obstetrical nurses, certified nurse-midwives, pediatric nurse practitioners, physician assistants, pediatricians and Ob/Gyn hospitalists. Whether delivered by a nurse-midwife or hospitalist, our philosophy of care is the same. Women create their own birth plans; minimal intervention, extensive labor support and open communication are our standard. We do not allow a water birth experience based on current ACOG and AAP guidelines.

The Birthing Center continues to have the best clinical outcomes in the Northeastern region of New York, including:

    • In 2017, there were over 1034 babies born at Bassett Medical Center
    • C-section rate was 26% (13.8% being Primary)
    • 2.8% were operative vaginal deliveries (vacuum assisted)
    • 83.9% of new mothers initiated breastfeeding, a key indicator for infant health and well-being

“Rooming in with baby and nursing care at the bedside are two extremely important aspects of care,” explains Birthing Center nurse manager Robin Stasilli. “All of our nurses provide labor, neonatal and post-partum care. We have a model that you just don’t see at many other hospitals.”

    Birthing Center Hours & Policies

    While in labor

As a laboring mother, you may have three support persons with you during your labor and birth. Upon admission to the Birthing Center you will be given three passes for you to give out as you choose. All other family members and friends will be asked to wait in our family lounge located just outside of the Birthing Center. If a cesarean section becomes necessary, you may have one support person accompany you to the operating room. This is subject to approval by the Department of Anesthesia.

    After your birth

We happily welcome one primary support person to stay with you 24 hours a day for the duration of your postpartum stay. We welcome other visitors between 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Please note, with flu season upon us, our visitation policy for the Bassett Birthing Center and hospital’s pediatric unit has been modified; only the birthing coach, parents, grandparents and siblings of the baby or pediatric patient may visit, as long as they are healthy. Read more here
