Medical Technologist Technical Supervisor-Full Time

NYS-licensed and Supervisory-qualified Medical Technologist who is responsible for the daily operations of the Clinical Laboratory and Blood Bank.  Directs, reviews and/or verifies work of other clinical laboratory personnel, including Medical Lab Technologists/Technicians and lab support staff.  Supervises functions and activities of the shift, ensuring an efficient workflow and regulatory compliance.  Directs support staff as needed to meet hospital or laboratory needs.  Correlates knowledge and understanding of theory to independently solve problems and answer questions related to the clinical  laboratory.  Along with laboratory management, is responsible for maintaining policies and procedures, equality control practices, inventory, and staff evaluations.  Supervises the clinical laboratory department in the absence of the LFH Dept. Director of Lab Services, addressing issues or concerns in a timely and professional manner.

The MT Technical Supervisor also performs the duties of a Medical Technologist.

A Medical Technologist (MT) performs the Clinical Laboratory and Blood Bank tests for procedures or examinations, including quality control, equipment calibration and maintenance, and regulatory documentation.  The Medical Technologist participates in quality assurance activities and performance improvement as related to the laboratory.  The Medical Technologist correlates knowledge and understanding of theory, which requires the exercise of independent judgment and responsibility, while striving to achieve service excellence for the lab's internal and external customers.  Please refer to the LFH Lab's NYSDOH Clinical Laboratory Permit for an overview of test categories performed under the LFH Laboratory permit  

Key Benefits of this Position

Day position 6:30AM-3:00PM with alternating weekends and holidays 

Day/Evening position: Monday-Sunday 7 days on 7 days off, 1:00PM-11:00PM with alternating weekends

Requirements

Position requires extensive standing, routine walking, occasional sitting, and some repetitive hand motions.

Ability to push/pull up to 50 lbs and lift objects of up to 50 lbs is occasionally required.

Position includes exposure to moving electro-mechanical parts, some loud noises, and infectious substances.

Position requires extensive close visual work, requiring visual acuity.

Position requires some telephone communication, requiring the ability to listen and respond clearly.

Some laboratory tests performed are dependent on color determination.  Ability to differentiate colors is required to perform these tests.

Education

Bachelor's degree in Medical Technology, Biology, Chemistry, or related biological science required.  A Bachelor’s degree may not be required if the NYS Education Department has permitted the successful incumbent to be licensed as a Clinical Laboratory Technologist under grandfathering rules/ as equivalent education and training in lieu of all or part of an approved program.

Experience

Candidates must be qualified as a Medical Technologist (MT) in accordance with New York State Department of Health regulations.

Six (6) years as a NYS-licensed Clinical Laboratory Technologist, required.

Experience in standard clinical laboratory methodologies required.

Eighteen months of supervisory experience in a clinical laboratory setting, preferred.

Previous experience with a Laboratory Information System (LIS), preferred.

Certifications

Current valid licensure by NYS Education Department as a Clinical Laboratory Technologist required, or NYS licensure-eligible with a limited permit or limited license as a Clinical Laboratory Technologist.

ASCP certification preferred.

Participation in a professional laboratory organization outside of the hospital, preferred.

Skills

Strong attention to detail, precision, and commitment to accuracy are essential.

Strong written and verbal communication skills are essential. 

Ability to build rapport quickly, develop trust, sustain working relationships, and represent LFH positively in internal and external meetings is required. 

Need to possess good interpersonal and communication skills due to supervisory nature of position.

Strong time-management and organizational skills are required. 

Must be familiar with Microsoft Office applications, including but not limited to, Excel, Word, and Power Point.
