Primary and Specialty Care Expand in Herkimer

March 1, 2014

In order to meet a growing demand for primary and specialty health care in the Mohawk Valley region, Bassett Healthcare Network has renovated and expanded its health center on Albany Street in Herkimer. A celebratory open house was held Tuesday, March 18.

The newly renovated and expanded facility is designed around the patient’s needs featuring a comfortable atmosphere and personal approach to advanced medical care. The primary care suite incorporates patient centered medical home concepts of care where a health care team collaborates on each patient’s care—a team consists of a physician working side-by-side with an advanced practice clinician as well as a nurse and medical assistant. The layout of the primary care suite also facilitates the team approach to care. In addition, as a patient centered practice, the overall space was laid out to minimize walking distances and provide ease of way finding for patients.

Bassett first opened a primary care health center in Herkimer in 1986, and in the following two decades continued to grow and adapt its services to meet the changing needs of the region. Specialty and urgent care were added to complement the primary care services.

Over the past five years, outpatient visits for cancer treatment and oncology care have increased 86 percent at Bassett’s Herkimer facility. Since 2005, there has been a 12 percent increase in general outpatient surgery visits, and other services have experienced similar growth. The expansion and renovations will help accommodate the increased demand for services with expanded access also to pediatric, women’s health, convenient care and cancer care services.

In addition to Bassett’s health center in Herkimer, the network’s Herkimer County facilities include Valley Health Services, a skilled nursing and short term rehabilitation facility; Little Falls Hospital, which also offers primary and specialty care services on its campus; At Home Care, which provides in-home health care services, and First Community Care of Bassett provides quality home care equipment, supplies and related services in a seven county region that includes Herkimer County.
