Manzer,Andrew,HR2016.jpgBassett Healthcare Network’s new Chief Operating Officer (COO) officially began his work at Bassett Tuesday, March 1, 2016. Network President and CEO Vance M. Brown, MD, and the Board of Trustees announced the selection of Andrew R. Manzer as Executive Vice President and Network COO in December of last year.

As Chief Operating Officer, Manzer is responsible for the operating performance of Bassett Medical Center and for leading operational efficiencies and performance across the Bassett Healthcare Network. In addition, in his position as COO, Manzer will be tasked with helping to envision and create models of operational integration, structures and systems that will best position the network for success.

Manzer comes to Bassett from Schuyler Hospital in Montour Falls, NY, where he was President and CEO since 2011. He also led Schuyler Hospital’s successful affiliation and merger with Cayuga Health System in Ithaca, NY, serving as System Vice President since 2014 in addition to retaining his role as CEO at Schuyler.

“As our network structure evolves, opportunities exist to evaluate and improve operational integration in a way that positions the network for success and supports the needs of the region’s patients and the organization’s providers,” observed Brown. “Andrew has a wealth of leadership experience in this arena and brings a critical skill set to bear on the challenges in front of us. We are extremely fortunate and pleased to have him join the leadership team at Bassett Healthcare Network.”

A national search for a new Network COO began in June of last year. The search committee reviewed a dozen candidates out of a pool of 30 applicants and narrowed the list to six semi-finalists and two finalists. Manzer was the top choice for the COO position.

“It is clear to me that Bassett has been a forward looking organization from its early beginning as a physician-led hospital to the creation of the comprehensive integrated rural delivery system that exists today,” said Manzer. “This history and breadth of resources positions the network well for leading how care is delivered in our communities for the future. I believe that our people make the biggest difference in our business every day. Throughout my selection process, what impressed me most about Bassett was the quality and passion of the physicians, staff, leadership and governance I met at every level. I am excited to be joining a great team."

Prior to his roles as CEO at Schuyler Hospital and System VP for Cayuga Health System, Manzer was Vice President of Operations at Riverside Methodist Hospital in Columbus, Ohio, 2007-2011. He also previously served as Vice President of Support Services at Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana, IL, 2004-2007, and he was Administrative Director of Operations at Guthrie, 1997-2004.

Manzer obtained his master’s in Health Services Administration from George Washington University and his bachelor’s in Health Services Administration from Ithaca College. He is a member of the American College of Healthcare Executives and recently moved to Cooperstown. His wife Michele and their daughters Mia and Emily will join him at the end of the school year.
