Hellenthal Appointed Chief of Surgery

April 12, 2015

hellenthalBassett Medical Center announces the appointment of Dr. Nicholas Hellenthal as Chief ofthe Department of Surgery. Hellenthal has been serving as acting chief since April of 2013 when the position was vacated by Dr. Steven Heneghan who took on the role of chief clinical officer at Bassett.

In announcing the formal appointment of Hellenthal as chief of surgery, Bassett’s President and CEO Dr. Vance Brown said, “In the two years since assuming the interim role, Dr. Hellenthal has demonstrated outstanding natural leadership skills and earned the respect of colleagues across the organization for his commitment to patients, the department’s quality of care and to staff. We are fortunate that he has accepted this appointment.”

“My transition into the formal role of chief of surgery with a group of talented, engaged and dynamic providers is a tremendous privilege,” said Hellenthal. “I look forward to working with our provider and management teams to continue to ensure that the patients we serve experience the highest quality of surgical care.”

Heneghan noted that Hellenthal has also been a staunch advocate of bringing along the next generation of surgeons. “Surgical services are critically important to any hospital, but especially so in a rural environment where people otherwise would have to travel great distances to get the care they need. The underpinning of a good surgical program includes training new surgeons. In the time that Dr. Hellenthal has been at Bassett and most recently in his position leading the surgical program, he has demonstrated a strong commitment to the education of our surgical residents.”
Most recently, Hellenthal led a surgical residency program research initiative that culminated in the submission of a series of research papers, each with a surgical resident as a participating author. Currently, three of these have been accepted for publication.

Hellenthal came to Bassett in 2010 after completing minimally invasive urology surgery fellowship training at Roswell Park Cancer Center in Buffalo. He received his undergraduate degree, magna cum laude, at Santa Clara University and his medical degree, magna cum laude, at Georgetown University School of Medicine. He completed a residency in urology at the University of California/Davis Medical Center, and was chief resident between 2008-2009.

Hellenthal is a member of the American Medical Association, the American Association of Clinical Urologists, the American Urological Association, the Endourological Society and the Society of Urologic Oncology. He is also a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons.
