Gahan Receives 2015 AANP Nurse Practitioner State Award for Excellence

June 1, 2015

gahanBassett nurse practitioner Sheila Gahan, FNP-C, DSN, has received the 2015 AANP (American Association of Nurse Practitioners) Nurse Practitioner State Award for Excellence from New York. The prestigious NP State Award for Excellence is given to an individual nurse practitioner in each state who has demonstrated excellence in their area of clinic practice. Gahan currently works in the Department of Pulmonary Medicine and cares for pulmonary patients and sleep patients in Cooperstown, Cobleskill, Oneonta and Herkimer.

“It’s such an honor being recognized and I’m humbled by it,” says Gahan. “I became a nurse because I like to make sure people get the care they need, and I have the education and experience to bring the best care and instruction to patients.”

Gahan, an Ilion resident, has been a nurse practitioner for 28 years—23 of those at Bassett—and has the distinction of having been the first nurse practitioner in the Mohawk Valley, when in 1987 she joined a private physician practice for five years. Gahan joined Bassett in 1992 at Herkimer Health Center as a family nurse practitioner, and in 2004 she transitioned to pulmonary medicine.

She began her nursing career as a licensed practical nurse and then completed an associate degree in nursing at SUNY Albany. She became certified as a family nurse practitioner and earned a Bachelor of Science in community health nursing and a Master of Science as an adult nurse practitioner at SUNY
Institute of Technology (IT) at Utica/Rome. Gahan recently earned her doctor of science in nursing (DSN) through Fort Jones University.

Gahan is also an adjunct faculty member for the nurse practitioner program at SUNY IT, an EKG technician instructor, and she performs physicals for volunteer firefighters and commercial drivers through Occupational Medicine at NYCAMH (New York Centers for Agricultural Medicine and Health). She is the health officer for the Village of Herkimer.

Gahan will be formally recognized for her achievement at the 2015 AANP National Conference in New Orleans, Louisiana, this month.
