Bassett's Environmental Services Technicians Can Now Earn National Certification

November 8, 2015

Cooperstown, NY -

Bassett Healthcare Network is one of only 40 health care organizations nationwide that has adopted Certified Healthcare Environmental Services Technician Training (T-CHEST), a program that sets performance and knowledge criteria for environmental services technicians (formerly called housekeepers).

“As environmental services technicians gain more credentials after completing annual assessments, achieving certifications and reaching work milestones, they can become supervisors,” says Noel Clinton, director of Guest Services at Bassett Medical Center. “Previously, management was only considered for employees who have obtained a college education. Now, folks will have a chance to move up the ladder based on their experience and proficiency in their daily tasks. If you are a hard worker, enjoy learning and desire a career helping people, then this is the job for you.”

Elvin May, environmental services manager at Bassett Medical Center, has completed the certification requirements for T-CHEST, which will allow him to nationally certify environmental services technicians network-wide through the Association of the Healthcare Environment (AHE), a membership group of the American Hospital Association.

“This is a huge step forward for Bassett’s Environmental Services Department,” says May. “Bassett Healthcare Network is working to create more opportunities for employees in this department to earn promotions. Positions have been created that classify environmental services technicians as level I, II and III. Environmental Services is now considered a clinical position.”

More rigorous mandatory education requirements have been implemented for environmental services technicians at the six month and one year anniversaries of their hire dates. Annual assessments help ensure that staff is up to date on infection control protocols and other clinical competency requirements.

Transforming the protocols and opportunities within Environmental Services is a mission of Bassett Healthcare Network that aims to more accurately identify employees in this division of work. “Environmental Services staff members are a key part of patient and employee care and safety,” says Clinton.
