Bassett Announces UpClose Cardiac Surgery Student Essay Winners

UPCLOSE.jpgCooperstown, N.Y. – Three students have been selected as grand prize essay winners as part of the UpClose Cardiac Surgery program at Bassett Medical Center. The UpClose program teaches students about the importance of regular exercise, avoiding tobacco use and eating healthy foods to help prevent heart disease later in life.

“The rate of premature cardiac death is higher in our region than any other part of New York State,” says Subashini Daniel, MD, Bassett cardiothoracic surgeon and director of the UpClose program. “The UpClose program provides us a unique opportunity to engage with our community and, most importantly, our children. We hope to educate and support the development of healthy lifestyles, and through this education, empower our youth to take control of their health.”

The UpClose Cardiac Surgery program, which began a dozen years ago, consists of a three-hour information and discussion session at Bassett Medical Center in Cooperstown, a video of an open-heart operation and ends with a healthy lunch.

Through a variety of interactive activities, students learn about consequences of their own individual choices. The program concludes with a take-home essay contest, sponsored by Ace Haggerty Hardware, where students describe how they would help people in their community lead healthier lifestyles.

The most recent grand prize essay winners are:
First place:  Grace Hoffman, Fort Plain Jr. High School
Second place: Abigael O’Donnell, Duanesburg High School
Third place:  Charlotte Bancella, Herkimer High School

Each winner receives a gift card to a local sporting goods store. More than three dozen area schools participate in Bassett’s UpClose Cardiac Surgery program.
