Healthy Bones for 2018!

January 8, 2018

A New Year's Resolution tip from Doctor Wetzel, Chief of the Department of Orthopedics & Orthopedic Services:

"Commit to healthy bones, joints and muscles in 2018!

As we all age, bones may become fragile, joints stiff, and muscles weak. Aside from discomfort, these changes may decrease mobility, and compromise quality of life. The key to the health of the Musculoskeletal system (bone, joints, and muscle) is to keep the whole system moving.  Regular exercise, even walking, can help prevent bone loss leading to osteoporosis, keep joints from stiffening, and keep muscles strong. The old expression, “Use it or lose it” is particularly appropriate to the health of the musculoskeletal system. 1 hour of exercise per day is all it takes to keep things moving.  Check with your doctor before starting any exercise program. If you are able to do so, here are some suggestions to keep you healthy and moving:

  1. Use the stairs- walk  up 1, down 2.
  2. Try to get in at least 5000 steps per day.
  3. Park at the end of the parking lot and walk more.
  4. When unloading your car or truck, make multiple small trips.
  5. Swing your arms when walking.
  6. Stay well hydrated.
  7. Try to get at least 1000mgs of Calcium in  your diet.

Here is to a healthy 2018!"
