Research has proven that a healthy mouth is essential to a child’s overall well-being. In New York State and rural central New York, we know the incidence of dental pain and tooth decay is too high. A state survey of school children by the Schuyler Center for Analysis and Advocacy found approximately 44% had experienced tooth decay by the third grade and about 22% had untreated tooth decay. If untreated, the consequences can be a painful infection that can lead to life-threatening conditions. Dr. Leah Carpenter, a dentist with Bassett’s school-based health program, offers some great tips and corrects some misconceptions about children’s dental care.
