Groundbreaking paves way for construction of new wing

Valley Residential Services’ celebrated the groundbreaking of an expansion of their facilities in Herkimer on Tuesday, Nov. 28. The expansion will provide 14 one-bedroom apartments, all large enough for couples, as well as a new fully staffed wellness and fitness center for use by all residents of Valley Residential Services.VRS_Groundbreaking_11_28_17_2.jpg

The expansion of the facility will help to address the need for senior housing with support services for those 62 years of age or older, offering carefree senior living to allow residents to retain independence within their community without the hassles of home-ownership.

Valley Health Services is an assisted living and enriched housing facility featuring 48 efficiency apartment units, restaurant style dining room, family dining room for visitors, community room, and an outdoor garden and gazebo. Valley Residential Services is currently at full capacity with a waiting list, providing an urgent need for this expansion of its facilities.

New York Leading Age (leadingageny.org) states that within the coming years, 1 in 5 New York State residents will be over the age of 65 by 2040, prompting a need for more assisted living in our community. Valley Residential Services is a unique type of care that caters to our aging community, but still allows residents to maintain freedoms. As explained by Lisa M. Betrus, president of Valley Health Services and Valley Residential Services, “The biggest gap we saw were people that were stuck in nursing homes because they might need care a couple of times a day. Lots of people need care, they don’t need it all day, every day but they don’t know when they’re going to need it.”

The expansion ceremony included a special presentation by The Community Foundation of Herkimer & Oneida Counties. Speakers include Lisa M. Betrus, president, Valley Health Services and Valley Residential Services, Dr. Vance Brown, CEO, Bassett Healthcare Network and Ann Lyga, secretary, VRS board of directors.
