    November 8, 2018

A.O. Fox Hospital was awarded an “A” from The Leapfrog Group’s Fall 2018 Hospital Safety Grade, placing the organization among the top facilities nationwide for patient safety excellence. The designation recognizes A.O. Fox Hospital’s efforts in protecting patients from harm and meeting the highest safety standards in the United States.

The Leapfrog Group is a national organization committed to improving health care quality and safety for patients. The Safety Grade assigns an A, B, C, D, or F grade to hospitals across the country based on their performance in preventing medical errors, infections and other harms among patients in their care.

“A.O. Fox’s staff works relentlessly to provide the safest care to our patients. I am incredibly proud of our team for having achieved this prestigious award,” says Jeff Joyner, president of A.O. Fox Hospital. “We are going to work harder than ever to maintain this designation. Safety and excellence in care is our foremost priority at A.O. Fox, and we are proud to be entrusted with the care of our community members.”

“Leapfrog’s Hospital Safety Grade ranking provides an important resource for patients, and a benchmark for hospitals, to determine how care at one hospital compares to others in a region,” says Leah Binder, president and CEO of The Leapfrog Group. “Hospitals that earn an A Hospital Safety Grade deserve to be recognized for their impressive efforts in preventing medical harm and errors.”

Developed under the guidance of a National Expert Panel, the Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade uses 28 measures of publicly available hospital safety data to assign grades to more than 2,600 U.S. hospitals twice per year. The Hospital Safety Grade’s methodology is peer-reviewed and fully transparent. The assessment is based on vital steps hospitals take to protect patients from harm, including:

    • Consistently communicating thoroughly with patients about their medications and discharge instructions
    • Quadruple-checking medication orders to ensure patients receive the right medicine in the right dose at the right time
    • Following stringent sterilization guidelines to prevent hospital-acquired infections
    • Implementing state-of-the-art equipment and techniques to prevent patient falls and other injuries
    • Training staff and leadership to listen and work collaboratively to reduce errors

“This designation from The Leapfrog Group is a tremendous accomplishment and confirms what the hospital Board has been witnessing under Mr. Joyner’s leadership,” says Jeanne-Marie Havener, A.O. Fox Hospital Board president. “A.O. Fox has grown into an impressive, multidisciplinary community of services, but one thing has always remained the same: the hospital’s mission to provide excellence in health care to our families, friends, and neighbors. True to the heart of the organization, this recognition reflects the important work performed at A.O. Fox every day.”
