Protective Fabric Masks

Volunteer Opportunity:
Protective Fabric Masks

Bassett Healthcare Network is seeking volunteers and supporters to assist in the sewing of protective fabric masks.

While the fabric masks are not a substitute for healthcare grade respirator-type masks, this is a coordinated effort to use the fabric masks to extend the life and supply of the respirator masks. These respirator masks are in critical short supply nationally, and provide the best protection for our health care workers, patients, and community.

The network will also be supplying masks for use by visitors to our organization while they are on campus.

There are multiple ways you can assist. Some of these include:

  • Donation of your time in sewing of the fabric masks.
  • Donation of supplies.
  • Monetary donation to purchase supplies for use by the volunteer sewing team.

All materials and donated masks will be disinfected prior to and between uses.

If you desire to donate your time in the creation of masks:

  • A standardized pattern is available for use, including written and video instructions.
  • We are looking for both 2-PLY and 3-PLY masks.
  • Here are a few considerations to keep in mind while creating masks:
    • A softer elastic with good stretch is preferred. If the elastic if firm with little stretch, a longer piece may be necessary such that the mask measure between 16 and 17 inches in width.
    • If elastic is not available, fabric ties are an acceptable alternative. There should be four ties total – two on the top, and two on the bottom. If fabric ties are used, please consider making each length used for tying about 18” long.
  • Once masks are assembled, they may be dropped off or mailed into the central collection point.
    • Completed protective fabric masks may be dropped off at the following Network Hospitals. Clearly marked collection bins are located outside the following locations:
      • Cobleskill Regional Hospital
      • A.O. Fox Hospital
      • Little Falls Hospital
      • O’Connor Hospital
      • Bassett Medical Center Warehouse (26 Grove Street, Cooperstown)
    • Mailed donations may be sent to: Bassett Medical Center Warehouse, 26 Grove St. Cooperstown, NY 13326 Attention: Fabric Masks

For all sewing people: Please contact the Bassett Medical Center Volunteer Department at (607) 547-6691 or email Barbara.Tarka@bassett.org to submit your name to the volunteer list, obtain more information on how to donate your finished masks, or if you are in need of supplies.

For sewing people interested in donating fabric as well as their time, please see the supply guidelines below.

If you desire to donate supplies to the effort, the supplies we are looking for include:

  • Elastic cord or 1/8” elastic ribbon
    • 1 yard creates approximately 2 masks

If you wish to submit a monetary donation to support these or other efforts:

  • Please contact the Friends of Bassett at (607) 547-3928 or 1-800-BASSETT.
  • Visit friendsofbassett.org and look for the “Donate Now” in upper right corner.
    • Within the donation form, please select the “designation” of “Other.”

Again, thank you for your interest, support, and efforts to keep our community safe and healthy! Your assistance is greatly, and humbly, appreciated!
