Obesity
Prevention and treatment of childhood obesity and the potential health risk associated with it is crucial to a child's present and future well-being. Bassett Healthcare providers strive to identify overweight children and intervene before obesity becomes severe. In addition to providing medical care and tracking at-risk children, they support children and their families and encourage them to adopt healthy lifestyle habits. Clinical dieticians are available to consult with families and offer practical recommendations for improving dietary quality. Bassett's Preventive Cardiology Clinic is also a resource for children diagnosed with high blood pressure and high cholesterol levels.

Well Child Visits
At Bassett Healthcare, our Well Child Visits provide the regular medical attention needed to help your child lead an active and healthy life.
Beginning immediately after birth and continuing throughout the college years, our pediatricians stay in touch with your child's growth and development and provide you with the resources you need for the health of your child.
How Often Do Well Child Visits Take Place?
Your child's first Well-Child Visit takes place within 48 hours of Newborn Discharge, then again two weeks after birth. After that, visits are scheduled at one, two, four, six, nine, fifteen, eighteen, and twenty-four months. Later visits are scheduled yearly through college years (or until the child marries, gives birth, or moves out on their own).
What Happens During a Well Child Visit?
A typical Well Child Visit begins with a medical assistant or registered nurse measuring your child's weight, height, head circumference, temperature and blood pressure. These measurements are noted on your child's growth chart and compared to measurements taken during the last visit.
You will then be asked to fill out a questionnaire about your child's eating habits, sleeping, elimination and developmental progress. You may also write down any particular questions or concerns you may have about the health of your child.
The provider will then review your child's growth chart, immunization record and questionnaire, and will address any questions or concerns you may have.
Next, the provider will examine your child and discuss anything of interest she or he may find during the examination. The provider will then order the appropriate immunizations as well as any necessary prescription medications. Vision and hearing screening will typically be done for children ages 3 to 4.
When the provider has completed the examination, a registered nurse will give your child the immunizations as well as any laboratory requests or prescriptions ordered by the provider.
