Joint Replacement Center

Annually, a half-a-million people undergo total joint replacement surgery. At Bassett Medical Center, we perform approximately 400 total joint replacements a year. Candidates for the procedure are usually individuals with arthritis and chronic joint pain which interferes with their daily activities.

Joint replacement surgery removes the damaged and worn parts of the knee or hip and replaces them with artificial parts called prostheses. The implant, especially selected to match individual needs, is affixed to the underlying bones to make the joint strong, stable and flexible again. The surgery relieves pain and restores mobility and independence in activities of daily living.

Over the past few decades, there have been many advances in the design, construction and materials used for total joint prosthesis. As a result, total joint replacements have a 90 percent chance or greater of lasting a minimum of 15 years.
