New FDA Investigational Device Study at Bassett by the Shoulder and Sports Institute

Drs. Lassiter and Wittstein are involved in an FDA approved study of a new shoulder arthroplasty (replacement) device that has been used in Europe and is seeking approval for use in the United States.

Two major issues in joint replacements are the need for minimally invasive surgery and the utilization of devices which conserve the body’s native bone.

This device attempts to address these issues on the humeral (arm bone side) by implanting a stemless “nucleus” to provide fixation in the humeral bone rather than a stem. The typical stem length is 5 to 7 inches long. The new device being studied is less than an inch long, similar in some respects to resurfacing techniques, but with better glenoid (socket) exposure so that both sides of the joint can be replaced. The hope is to preserve more bone through a less invasive technique, and give patients better long term solutions.

Youth Baseball Survey

Dr. Jocelyn Wittstein, M.D., orthopedic surgeon at Bassett Medical Center, Cooperstown, is conducting a survey of youth baseball players and their parents. The purpose of this study is to try to identify training/playing habits and “overuse” injury patterns among youth baseball players.

It is hoped that by identifying training/playing habits that are associated with “overuse” injuries, youth baseball training programs could be developed aimed at reducing these types of injuries.

If you have any questions or would like to participate in the survey, please call the study coordinator, Jennifer Victory, RN at 607-547-6965.
