There are many different types of aesthetic surgery performed on the breast including reduction, augmentation, lift and reconstruction.

Breast reduction, also known as reduction mammaplasty, removes excess breast fat, tissue and skin to achieve a breast size in proportion with the body. This procedure is often performed for women who are looking to alleviate the discomfort associated with overly large breasts. Breast reduction surgery may also help improve a woman’s self-image and confidence, and can restore her ability to participate in physical activities.

Breast augmentation surgery, also known as augmentation mammaplasty, involves using implants to fulfill a woman’s desire for fuller breasts. Breast augmentation is often a popular procedure to restore breast volume lost after weight reduction or pregnancy. During augmentation, implants are placed under the breast tissue or chest muscles. For some women, breast augmentation is a way to improve their self-image and confidence. For others, breast augmentation is a way to reconstruct a breast after surgery for breast cancer or other conditions affecting the breast.

Breast lift surgery, also known as mastopexy, raises and firms the breasts by removing excess skin and tightening the surrounding tissue to reshape and support the new breast contour. This procedure is often performed for women who are looking to enhance their appearance. A woman's breasts often change over time, losing their youthful shape and firmness. These changes and loss of skin elasticity can result from pregnancy and breastfeeding, weight fluctuations, and aging. A breast lift can also reduce the areola, which becomes enlarged over time.

Breast reconstruction is achieved through several plastic surgery techniques. Reconstruction is an attempt to restore a breast to near normal shape, size and appearance. This procedure may be used to reconstruct a breast after surgery for breast cancer, asymmetric breasts, or other conditions affecting the breast. Although breast reconstruction can rebuild a breast, the results are highly variable. If only one breast is affected, it alone may be reconstructed. In addition, a breast lift, breast reduction or breast augmentation may be recommended to improve symmetry of the size and position of both breasts.
