UpClose Cardiac Surgery
Several years ago, Bassett's Chief of Cardiac Surgery, Dr. Robert Lancey, began a program called UpClose Cardiac Surgery to teach area seventh graders about the importance of regular exercise, avoidance of tobacco use and choosing healthy lifestyle habits that could help prevent heart disease later in life. Lancey's unique approach to educating teenagers about healthy lifestyles has been tremendously popular with over three dozen schools enrolled in the program. The students come to Bassett in Cooperstown where they engage in a discussion of practical ways to live heart healthy lives and they watch open heart surgery. Sometimes, if the surgery schedule allows, the students get to see heart surgery live and talk with the surgeon while he's performing the operation.
