Clark Wins Nursing Award, Henry Allen Moe Prize

Cooperstown, N.Y. — A Bassett nurse who is known to be a wonderful patient advocate and who frequently receives patient and family compliments, is this year’s recipient of the Henry Allen Moe Prize in Honor of Pearl F. Day award. This prized nursing award is given annually to a Bassett nurse who exemplifies concern for patients and their families and demonstrates enthusiasm and integrity. The 2011 winner is Ashley Clark, R.N., who has been employed at Bassett Medical Center for over seven years and works in the Special Care Unit (SCU). Clark is also part of a team that reviews safety procedures and another group that resolves issues and promotes quality care. Clark is regarded by her peers as a good resource for them and an example of an excellent caregiver.

“I like the autonomy at Bassett and working here for a length of time has allowed me to really get to know my coworkers and form very positive working relationships,” said Clark. “My grandmother was a big influence in my decision to enter the nursing field and was a good example in how to treat others compassionately. I am also thankful that I have had tremendous support from my fiancé James, his parents and my parents.”

“I couldn’t be happier to have Ashley win this award,” said Joan MacDonald, R.N., nurse manger, SCU. “Ashley exemplifies what nursing is all about. She is a great mentor, coach and patient advocate. We are very fortunate to have her in the SCU and she is a great asset to our organization.”

Clark, who grew up in Canajoharie and now lives in Sharon Springs, is a graduate of Fulton Montgomery Community College. She will complete her Bachelor of Science in Nursing at State University of New York at Delhi in 2012, and has an interest in nursing education.

The Henry Allen Moe Prize honors Pearl F. Day, a nurse at the U.S. Naval Hospital in Brooklyn during World War I. Day cared for Dr. Henry Allen Moe, former chair of the Bassett Board of Trustees, while he was a patient at the hospital after the war. Dr. Moe’s will designated that a $500 annual award be given to a Bassett nurse in honor of Pearl F. Day. The award has been given since 1977.
