Rowell Park-trained urologist joins Bassett
Cooperstown, N.Y. – Nicholas John Hellenthal, M.D., having recently completed a minimally invasive urology surgery fellowship training at Roswell Park Cancer Center in Buffalo, has joined the Bassett Healthcare Network at Bassett Medical Center in Cooperstown. Dr. Hellenthal is the second physician in the Department of Urology at Bassett who is trained in minimally invasive (laparoscopic and robotic-assisted) surgery techniques to treat kidney, prostate and bladder conditions. Dr. Hellenthal joins Dr. Bermejo, a fellowship-trained urologic oncologist who has been performing da Vinci procedures since 2008.
Compared to a larger surgical incision used for open surgery, minimally invasive procedures usually results in less postoperative pain, a shorter hospital stay and a quicker recovery time for patients. Dr. Hellenthal will see patients for a range of urological issues including urinating difficulties, kidney stones, male infertility, impotence, testicular swelling, vasectomies, and urological and reproductive cancers.
Dr. Hellenthal received his undergraduate degree, magna cum laude, at Santa Clara University and his medical degree, magna cum laude, at Georgetown University School of Medicine. He completed residencies in surgery and urology at the University of California/Davis Medical Center, and was chief resident between 2008-2009. In 2009, he began his clinical fellowship in minimally invasive (laparoscopic and robotic) urologic oncology at Roswell Park Cancer Center.
Dr. Hellenthal is a member of the American Medical Association, the American Association of Clinical Urologists, the American Urological Association, the Endourological Society and the Society of Urologic Oncology. He has been published in a variety of medical journals, including International Urology and Nephrology, Urology, Indian Journal of Urology, International Brazilian Journal of Urology, Journal of Urology, Nature Clinical Practice Urology, and Neurology and Urodynamics.
Dr. Hellenthal will see adult patients at Bassett Medical Center in Cooperstown, at Oneonta Specialty Services and at Cobleskill Regional Hospital. Dr. Bermejo sees patients in Cooperstown and Herkimer. Other Bassett urologists include Drs. Raymond McGoldrick, division chief; John Raymond, Jennifer Lucas, Dinesh Bhat, and Allison Haenel, nurse practitioner.
