Bassett Part of State Initiative to Promote Healthier School Environments
Cooperstown, NY – With the 2010-2011 school year right around the corner, the Bassett Healthcare Network is preparing to use a $600,000 four-year state grant that will help schools create healthier environments for students and adults. Bassett is one of 19 grant recipients across New York State taking part in a Department of Health initiative aimed at policy development in schools that promotes healthy eating, increased physical activity and helps prevent and reduce tobacco use.
A 2008 audit by the Office of the State Comptroller found that only one of 20 school districts was in compliance with physical education regulations at all grade levels. The state Department of Health also says that although tobacco use is not allowed on the grounds of New York schools, a survey last May found that 38 percent of middle and high school students reported seeing at least one adult smoking on school property. Sixty four percent of high school students and 28 percent of middle school students reported seeing at least one student smoking on school property.
“In 2004, a congressional mandate required school districts participating in any federally reimbursed school meal program to develop a local school wellness policy,” notes Dr. Chris Kjolhede, pediatrician and director of Bassett’s School-Based Health Program. “Yet we know that many children are still consuming foods that have little nutritional value and are high in fat and calories.” In fact, the state Department of Health says more than two-thirds of all foods eaten by school-age children are low in nutrients and high in calories.
Project coordinator Thomas Hohensee says, “This grant will allow us to provide resources, technical assistance and support to over half of the school districts in Otsego, Schoharie and Delaware counties. Our goal is to enhance school policies and practices, and create school communities that enable students, faculty and staff alike to live well and learn well. We believe the health department is right on target to address eating, exercise and tobacco use, as these lifestyle choices top the list of health behaviors that influence our well being."
Bassett will launch its healthier schools project by partnering with five school districts. Those districts are Middleburgh, Morris, Edmeston, South Kortright and Stamford.
