Bassett Opens New Dialysis Center At Little Falls Hospital
Cooperstown, N.Y. – People needing dialysis in the Mohawk Valley now have another treatment option close to home with the opening of the Bassett Healthcare Network’s dialysis center at Little Falls Hospital (LFH). The 12-station dialysis center has the capacity for 72 patients and will be staffed by a team of experienced registered nurses, licensed practical nurses, certified patient care technicians, dieticians and social workers. The patients are followed by Bassett’s board certified nephrologists, doctors who have been trained in the diagnosis and treatment of kidney disease and dialysis, on a regular basis.
“Bassett’s decision to open a dialysis center at Little Falls Hospital is welcome news to patients in the Mohawk Valley who are in need of additional options for treatments closer to home,” notes Chief of Nephrology Dr. Raquel Rosen. “It’s hard to understand how important this is unless you’re someone who has received dialysis or has a family member receiving dialysis. The trips to the hospital can be frequent and tiring. Just as important is the environment they receive the treatment in and this new space is just wonderful.”
The community is invited to celebrate the opening of the new center Oct. 27 from 4:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. Tours and refreshments will be offered. The new dialysis center at LFH was designed to create a relaxing personal atmosphere for patients, who may have several visits a week lasting hours at a time. The center is located on the hospital’s third floor and features an open design with the patient stations placed along the southern perimeter to capitalize on sunny open valley views. The individual stations provide complete privacy, patient storage, flexible seating, individual video monitors and personal lighting and window shade control. There is also a bright family waiting room and a home training education suite.
Little Falls Hospital CEO Mike Ogden says, "We are happy to offer residents from the Mohawk Valley and regional communities a new dialysis center that provides them state of the art services, in a relaxing setting close to home. This new dialysis center will not only help those struggling to manage their chronic kidney disease, but also offers support to their families and other services that will improve overall quality of life. Just like the recently opened Adult Day Care center and renovated inpatient and emergency services areas, Little Falls Hospital, along with Bassett Medical Center and the Bassett Healthcare Network, are committed to providing services that address the real needs of our friends, neighbors, and all the people we serve."
One in nine Americans has chronic kidney disease (CKD). That’s according to the National Kidney Foundation, which says 26 million people in this country have CKD and millions more are at risk. However, with dialysis – a treatment to replace the filtering function of the kidneys – many people who develop end stage renal disease as the result of failing kidneys can still lead a productive and largely normal life.
