Cooperstown, N.Y. - Women who participated in the second phase of the Bassett Mothers Health Project, which ended late last year, were entered into a drawing for two prizes. Heather Bowen of Burlington Flats won the first prize, a gift certificate with a value of $300 toward a local or regional trip to a destination of her choice. Danielle Greiner of Oneonta won second prize, a $75 gift certificate to a local restaurant of her choice.
The Bassett Mothers Health Project was the third in a series of studies aimed at understanding the health of pregnant women and their babies. The objective was to find out how the health of a mother and her baby might be affected by certain characteristics of the community in which they live. The project, funded by a $1 million dollar, five-year grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, paired Bassett Healthcare Network and Cornell University’s Division of Nutritional Sciences. The community component consisted of the locally-based Healthy Start Partnership, which included 43 health and nutrition professionals from across the eight counties served by Bassett Healthcare Network. Partnership members worked to create changes in communities that made it easier for pregnant women and new mothers to eat well, be physically active and breast-feed.
Data from this study, which builds on two previously funded joint Cornell-Bassett projects with the same name, will be available later this year. A total of 510 women completed all aspects of the Bassett Mothers Health Project.
