Bassett Employee Named Researcher Of Year
Cooperstown, NY - Kelly Rudd, Pharm.D., BCPS, CACP, a clinical pharmacist specialist in the Anticoagulation Clinic at Bassett Medical Center, has been named Researcher of the Year by the New York State Chapter of the American College of Clinical Pharmacy (NYSACCP).
Rudd was nominated for the award by Matthew Pearsall, Pharm.D., director of Pharmacy at Bassett. The award goes to a researcher who is the primary author of high quality, patient-care-oriented research that was published in the peer-reviewed primary literature during the previous two calendar years. Originality and significance of the research are also important selection criteria.
“Dr. Rudd is a great teacher, clinician and researcher, and we are fortunate to have her on our staff,” said Pearsall. “It’s Kelly’s most recent research on anticoagulation in a rural population that caught the attention of the judges.”
Rudd summarized her work in an article published in the journal Pharmacotherapy in which she discussed evidence-based medicine as it applies to anticoagulation. Rudd’s study evaluated the safety and economic impact of different models of anticoagulation services on nearly 1000 patients across the eight counties served by the Bassett Healthcare Network. The article demonstrated that when delivered by a specialized, interdisciplinary team, conventional anticoagulants can be cost-effective and safe in a rural population, with greater success than has been experienced by groups from larger teaching centers.
“Receiving this award is a great honor and humbling experience,”said Rudd. “My family has lived in the area for generations, and I am especially proud of our rural heritage. The type of research I do is an extension of the philosophy that being from a rural area should never preclude anyone from receiving good, quality health care. As a clinician, my daily focus is aimed at finding ways to improve the quality and safety of care for the patient, and I am fortunate to be part of an organization that feels as strongly in supporting that mission. The fun part is getting to share those findings with the rest of the world.”
This is not the first time Rudd has been honored by the American College of Clinical Pharmacy. Earlier this year, the national organization featured her on its Web site in recognition of her contributions to ACCP and the profession of Pharmacy.
