Professional Development Opportunities

Begin your nursing career with the support and guidance you want and need to become an outstanding nurse. This program will bridge the gap between your educational experience and the realities of the professional nurse role.

Your transition from student to professional begins in a supportive and caring environment.

A Great Start for all registered nurses in Acute Care Nursing

  • One day general employee orientation
  • Four day nursing orientation
  • One-on-one precepted experience on your assigned unit
  • Three days of additional orientation following patient care experience on your unit

Join the Nurse Residency Program

  • A special orientation day
  • Four additional seminar days which include some:
    • Shadowing experiences in other areas of the organization
    • Educational seminars adressing learning needs identified by you
    • Peer support group activities
  • Formalized professional mentor relationship

Other Professional Development Programs
New employees receive a paid hospital orientation and a six-week precepted competency based orientation on their assigned unit/department. Expert clinicians from Nursing Education and Research facilitate the nurse's integration into the patient care setting.

BLS and ACLS courses are offered to nurses - onsite throughout the year. Nursing management supports ongoing nursing education. Bassett Healthcare is an accredited provider of continuing education in nursing by The New York State Nurses Association.

The full service George Miner Mackenzie Medical Library & Learning Resource Center provides computer access to many on-line nursing journals. Additionally, through Training and Development, Bassett employees receive computer training in several software applications applicable to job duties.
