Telehealth is the use of electronic information and telecommunications technologies to support long-distance clinical health care, patient and professional health-related education, public health and health administration.

Technologies used include videoconferencing, the internet, store-and-forward imaging, streaming media, and terrestrial and wireless communications.

The technology brings benefits to both patients and health care professionals. "Virtual visits" on a routine basis by a professional nurse

  • Improve patient outcomes
  • Increase patient access to healthcare
  • Decrease need for emergent care and / or rehospitalization.

When patient’s vital signs are taken on a daily basis, irregularities can be caught before they become full-fledged problems. Nurses can be sent to patients’ homes at unscheduled times in addition to regular nursing visits, and based on the daily data, work directly with the patient’s doctor to adjust medication and diet regimens.
