Sophistication of Bassett's EMR Recognized

June 1, 2014

The advancement of information technology capabilities is crucial to success in the new health care environment, especially in the areas of patient safety and quality and service. The Bassett Healthcare Network appears very well positioned, having recently met the criteria for Stage 6 on the EMR Adoption ModelSM (EMRAM). Achieving Stage 6 represents an advanced level of information technology sophistication that is of clear benefit to patients as well as staff. The Stage 6 designation is awarded by HIMSS Analytics, a global organization focusing on improving health outcomes through information technology.

Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer Bertine McKenna, Ph.D., notes, “Bassett’s journey started several years ago with a commitment to our patients to assure their information is accessible wherever they receive care in the Bassett Network, We continue working to enhance our electronic medical record system and are pleased to have this available to our practitioners and patients.”

“To put the achievement into perspective, only 13 percent of all hospitals in the U.S. carry a HIMSS Stage 6 designation. I am very proud that this select group now includes Bassett Medical Center, Cobleskill Regional Hospital, Little Falls Hospital, O'Connor Hospital, and Tri-Town Regional Hospital. I see this as proof of Bassett’s constant focus on furthering the quality of care and clinical outcomes for our patients,” said Vice President and Chief Information Officer Scott Groom.

Among the key clinical applications Bassett has in place as the result of its EMR adoption are: computerized practitioner order entry, which allows physicians to enter patient orders directly into the clinical information system; closed loop medication administration, which uses bar codes to verify the correct medication and dose for the correct patient at the right time, and online nursing documentation with the ability to capture vital signs.

According to HIMSS Analytics, Stage 6 hospitals show evidence of:

  • Having a significant advantage over other health systems in terms of patient safety, clinician support, clinician recruitment, and nurse recruitment.
  • Almost fully automated/paperless medical records when they have implemented their IT applications across most of the inpatient care settings.
  • Starting to evaluate their data for care delivery process improvements or have already documented significant improvements in this area.
  • Investments that are within reach of most hospitals and recognize the strategic value of improving patient care with the EMR.
  • Creating strategic alignments with their medical staff to effectively utilize information technology to improve the patient safety environment.
  • Being well positioned to provide data to key stakeholders, such as payers, the government, physicians, consumers and employers, to support electronic health record environments and health information exchanges.

"HIMSS Analytics congratulates Bassett Medical Center for leading the way toward health IT adoption," said John Hoyt, FACHE, FHIMSS, Executive Vice President, HIMSS Analytics, "Stage 6 represents a level of sophistication that only 754 U.S. hospitals have reached to date.
