Bassett to Open Primary Care Center in Oneida

August 9, 2015

Bassett Healthcare Network President and CEO Vance M. Brown, MD, announced today that Bassett will open a second primary care health center in Madison County early next year. The Bassett Oneida Health Center will be located in the Dream Catcher Plaza on NYS Rt. 5 in the City of Oneida and will be open to the public, as well as employees of Oneida Nation Enterprises and their families. The new facility will offer a full range of family health care services including lab work, X-ray/imaging and radiology services. Bassett will also provide onsite laboratory and radiology services for Indian Health Services (IHS), a new service not previously available to IHS clients. Bassett's other health center in Madison County is located on NYS Rt. 12B just outside of Hamilton.

In making the announcement Dr. Brown said, “We welcome the opportunity to help expand access to primary care in the region as well as meet the needs of Nation employees and their families. The focus in health care today is shifting to population health management and preventive medicine, which aligns perfectly with Bassett’s patient-centered approach to care. At all of our health centers, a clinician-led team takes collective responsibility for each patient’s care. The emphasis is on continuous, comprehensive care that includes the coordination of care for people with chronic conditions. The goal is to help our patients get healthy, stay healthy and assure they receive the services right for them.”

Recent studies have shown an increasing need for more primary care providers in the area. The new practice in Oneida will initially have two primary care providers on staff with the potential for expansion. With a goal of helping to reduce emergency room visits and hospitalization, Bassett Healthcare brings innovative leadership and expertise in preventive care, with a strong emphasis on care management and the management of chronic diseases.

The Oneida Nation also plans to relocate its health services for Nation members to Dream Catcher Plaza, which is undergoing a complete renovation to accommodate the Bassett and Oneida Nation facilities. The project will consolidate all of the Oneida Nation Health Service offerings into one location. Currently the Health Service provides family health care, comprehensive diabetes care and education, dental care, community and behavioral health services. An early 2016 opening is planned for both health centers.

“The new Oneida Nation Health Clinic will allow us to expand our health care options and continue to build on the excellent health services we’ve been providing Nation Members for more than two decades,” said Ray Halbritter, Oneida Nation Representative and Nation Enterprises CEO. “We’re equally excited that Bassett Healthcare will be opening a new facility in Oneida and bringing their network of services to the area,” Halbritter said. “We know our Members, employees and our community will greatly benefit from Bassett’s leadership, expertise and innovative approach to preventive health care.”

The Oneida Nation will invest millions of dollars into revitalizing its Dream Catcher Plaza, including a complete upgrade and remodel of the existing building where the two new health care facilities will be located. The Oneida Nation has enlisted Hayner Hoyt Corporation of Syracuse for general contracting and construction management of the new health care project, and Boston-based MorrisSwitzer, visionaries for more than 2,000 projects ranging from primary care facilities to hospitals and ambulatory surgery centers, for the design work of the facilities.
