groundBassett to Build a New Health Center

(l. to r.) Ken Brinck, administrative director
of regional operations; Dr. Steven Heneghan, Chief Clinical Officer; Dr. Vance
Brown, President and CEO; Dr. Ellen Larson, medical director of the health center,
and Dr. David Haswell, medical director for health center operations in Bassett’s
western region, take part in a groundbreaking ceremony for the new Bassett
Healthcare Network – Hamilton-Madison Health Center.

Bassett Healthcare Network broke ground Wednesday, Oct. 1, for a new and expanded primary care center just outside of Hamilton on land next to the Price Chopper plaza on Rt. 12B in the Town of Madison. The new Hamilton-Madison Health Center will replace Bassett’s primary care center on Broad Street in the village of Hamilton. Dental care offered at the Broad Street location will also move to the new facility once it is completed next summer.

Bassett Healthcare Network President and CEO Dr. Vance Brown addressed the crowd at the groundbreaking, noting that the Hamilton-Madison Health Center is one of over two dozen community-based health centers within the Bassett network – all of which will play a critical role in the transition from a fee-for-service delivery system to a population-based health system in which there is emphasis on preventive and coordinated care in the primary care setting.

“Good primary care is the cornerstone of the health system of the future,” said Brown, who is a family physician by background. “The concept of caring for populations of people rather than individually treating patients as they come to us means we must reach people where they are, in the communities where they live. Bassett is well poised for this work, and our community-based primary care centers, like this new facility we are building here in the Town of Madison, are central to that mission. We are grateful for the support of the community and people who live here.”

Dr. Ellen Larson, the health center’s medical director, has been with the practice for 13 years. She said, “At 18,000 square feet, our new building will be more than triple the size of our previous clinic and doubles the number of exam rooms so that we can serve even more patients. We are looking forward to adding the ability to perform X-rays and ultrasound on site. In addition, we will be able to bring Bassett’s mobile mammography coach to the new health center, all of which will be an enormous benefit and convenience to our patients. Just as important is the integration of preventive dental care. We have two doctors of dental medicine and two dental hygienists who will make the move with us from Broad Street to this new location once the building is completed next summer.”

All of Bassett’s regional health centers are connected to a network-wide electronic medical record and, for the first time, a dental electronic health record will be installed. The dental health record at the Hamilton-Madison Health Center will be part of a larger effort to implement a dental EMR across the Bassett network.

Bassett Healthcare Network is an integrated health care system that provides care and services to people living in a 5,600 square mile region in upstate New York. The organization includes six corporately affiliated hospitals, as well as two skilled nursing facilities, over 40 community and school-based health centers and various health partners in related fields.
