Anticoagulation Center of Excellence

April 1, 2014

Bassett Medical Center has been named an Anticoagulation Center of Excellence by the Anticoagulation Forum, the leading organization of health care professionals working to improve the quality of care for patients taking antithrombotic medications.

Anticoagulation, or blood thinning, therapy is necessary to prevent serious adverse events related to thrombotic (clotting) disorders, but must be tightly monitored to ensure safe and effective outcomes. Achieving Center of Excellence status required rigorous evaluation of Bassett’s inpatient and outpatient anticoagulation care programs in several key areas: drug therapy management, disease state management, transition and coordination of care, service operational performance, and patient and family education. Bassett Medical Center achieved a score of excellence in each category, earning the Anticoagulation Center of Excellence distinction.

While excelling in anticoagulation care in both the inpatient and outpatient settings, the cornerstone of the Bassett Medical Center Anticoagulation Program is the outpatient care provided through Bassett’s anticoagulation management service to patients on oral blood thinners, such as Coumadin or Warfarin. A team of specially trained clinical pharmacists works collaboratively with nurses and physicians to closely monitor and manage patients who require anticoagulation therapy.

Under the direction of pharmacists Drs. Kelly Rudd and Amanda Winans, Bassett Healthcare Network’s anticoagulation management services are available in Cooperstown and Oneonta. Rudd, a nationally certified anticoagulation care provider, was also recently recognized for her work in this area by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, which awarded Rudd the prestigious Life Saving Patient Safety Award.
