What Happens at a Community Heart Program Screening?

The screening takes about 15 minutes and follows these steps...

Registration
Prior to (or at) your screening appointment, you will complete a brief registration and heart health history form.

Blood Pressure and Waist/Hip Measurements
Next, your blood pressure and waist/hip measurements will be taken.

Carbon Monoxide (for smokers only)
You will have a breath test to determine how much carbon monoxide is in your lungs.

Cholesterol Profile
You will have your total cholesterol (TC) and HDL cholesterol, or the so-called "good" cholesterol measured. It is not necessary to fast before you go through our screening program. You will have a small sample of blood taken by "finger stick". Your sample is then put into an analyzer, and in less than five minutes, program staff will provide your total cholesterol, HDL cholesterol and your TC/HDL ratio.

Heart Disease Risk Score
Based upon the results of the health screening, you will be given a heart disease risk score that will compare your chances of getting heart disease in the next 10 years with other people your age and sex.

Personal Counseling
The last step in the screening process is to speak with a trained Risk Factor Counselor who will review all your test results and give you practical help and educational materials to improve your heart health. Depending on results, we may suggest you see your health care provider for follow-up testing. Because health information is personal and confidential, only you, and if your results are abnormal, your doctor, will be given your health screening results.

Please call your health care provider or program staff at (800) 343-7527 with any questions about Bassett's Community Heart Program.

The Bassett Community Heart Program screening is designed to help you make wise choices about your heart health. Though this assessment reflects a number of personal risk factors, it is not a test to determine the presence or absence of heart disease. None of the information provided here is a substitute for talking with your health care provider.
