Overview
A PGY1 Pharmacy Practice Residency program, accredited by the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists, is available to prospective pharmacy residents at Bassett Healthcare. Two, one year positions are available. Bassett Healthcare participates in the ASHP residency matching program.
The primary goal of the Bassett Healthcare Pharmacy Practice residency program is to train and develop residents who possess in-depth knowledge and skills in clinical pharmacy practice. The primary emphasis of the pharmacy practice residency is the development of a wide spectrum of practice skills in medicine, surgery, ambulatory care, drug information, pain management, pharmacokinetics and clinical pharmacology.
Secondary goals of the program are to develop knowledge and skills in comprehensive pharmacy practice, teaching, and research methodology. Comprehensive pharmacy practice knowledge and skills refer to pharmacy administration, professional practice, and current issues. Teaching opportunities include leading clinical clerkships and facilitating small group discussions. Research opportunities in conjunction with the clinical faculty are extensive.
Program Details
Rotation Schedule: Each Pharmacy Resident is scheduled to do 11 clinical rotations. Required rotations include: Medicine (2 mos.), Critical Care Medicine (1 mo.), Anticoagulation Clinic (1 clinic/week for 6 months), Drug Information (1 mo.), Primary Care (1 clinic/week for 6 months), Hospital/Pharmacy Administration (1 mo.). Elective rotations in the areas of psychiatry, anesthesia, hematology/oncology, surgery, cardiology, nephrology, rheumatology, gastroenterology, neurology, endocrinology, pulmonary medicine and other services are available.
Service Schedule: Each pharmacy resident is required to rotate through the Clinical Pharmacology Service (CPS) for a total of 6 months over the 12 month residency period. The Pharmacy Resident is taught how to perform complete histories, review of systems and physical examination as this information pertains to the monitoring of drug therapy.
CPS Journal Club and Business Meeting: This occurs on a weekly basis.
Clinical Pharmacology Didactic Teaching Sessions: A monthly didactic teaching session is held throughout the course of the academic year. Topics to be covered include a wide variety of areas in clinical pharmacy, pharmacology, pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics, pharmacogenetics and drug metabolism. Teaching is by a variety of speakers.
Research Projects: One of the criteria for completing the Pharmacy Residency is the completion of a research project during the year. This project may be in any area pertinent to pharmacy practice. The completion of such a project will allow the resident to develop competencies in the area of research.
On-Call Schedule and Holidays: Pharmacy residents rotate on-call schedule for the Clinical Pharmacology Service with the Attending Clinical Pharmacologists.
Vacations/Holidays/Personal Days: Each pharmacy resident is entitled to 3 weeks (15 days) paid vacation and 4 elective holidays between July 1 and June 30.
Students: Pharm.D. and Medical Students from a variety of colleges rotate through the CPS monthly, allowing the Pharmacy Resident to participate in educational activities. Application deadline is January 31st of each year. Application and information material may be obtained by contacting:
