About The Clinical Research Division The Clinical Research Division (CRD) is an intergral part of the Research Institute of Bassett Healthcare. The CRD is located at the main Bassett campus in Cooperstown, New York. The goal of the CRD is the promotion of rational research in all areas of clinical research with focus on research in the areas of obesity, diabetes, hypertension and cardiovascular disease.
Bassett Healthcare includes a 180 bed rural teaching hospital of Columbia University's College of Physicians and Surgeons and three other rural hospitals in Delhi, Cobleskill, and Little Falls, New York, along with a skilled inpatient nursing facility located in Herkimer, New York. The Bassett Healthcare system encompasses an additional 23 community health centers. Our main hospital has approximately 8,240 inpatient admissions yearly and 500,000 outpatient visits at all ambulatory clinics. The catchment area is approximately 75 miles covering an eight-county region. All caregivers at Bassett are employees of the institution which allows easy patient access for research endeavors and free collaboration among colleagues. Bassett's educational commitment is evidenced by medical student and residency programs in internal medicine, surgery, and pharmacy.
The Research Institute is devoted to research in a broad number of areas. Basic research in immunology, protein and lipid chemistry, molecular biology and obesity serve as the anchor for laboratory science. Laboratory facilities are capable of high-pressure liquid chromatography technology, flow cytometry with cell sorting, radioimmunoassay, fluorescent polarization immunoassay, rate nephelometry, ELISA, ultracentrifugal analysis and polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. Access to gas and liquid chromatography and mass spectrometry is available. Epidemiologic research in the areas of cardiovascular, obesity and preventive medicine is a major commitment. Farm safety and farm-related illness research is carried out through the New York Center for Agricultural Medicine and Health (NYCAMH), the only state-funded agency of its kind in New York. Oncology research is carried out through the Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group (ECOG) and NSABP.
The CRD conducts Phase I-IV investigator-initiated and multi-center clinical studies including obesity, diabetes, hypertension, lipid-lowering and other cardiovascular disorders, arthritis, cancer prevention, anti-infectives and vaccine trials. Pharmacokinetic, pharmacodynamic, therapeutic, pharmacogenetic, pharmacogenomic, drug metabolism, pharmacoepidemiologic and pharmacologic research are ongoing in a number of specialty areas. Specialty Phase I trials in pharmacokinetics and pharmacogenetics are carried out. The CRD collaborates with prominent investigators from around the country.
Phase II, III, and IV studies are carried out either in patient care areas or in the ambulatory care setting as appropriate. Studies of any class of pharmacologic agents with specific subspecialty input are possible because of the collaborative nature of the institution. Our record for enrollment has been consistent over a 15 year period. In approximately 150 studies involving over 2,200 study participants, we have enrolled at 95 percent of goal, with a 97 percent retention rate.
The CRD provides 24-hour, 7 days per week service, facilitating study participant enrollment at any time into clinical trials. Our unit provides a team-based approach in conducting and supporting many types of clinical research, with each team member having specialist skills and knowledge in clinical research. The CRD staff consists of a medical director, a research nurse practitioner, a research nurse, and an operations manager. Bassett Healthcare Physicians serve as Principal Investigators.
