Clinician Opportunities
Research by Bassett clinicians can be in a wide variety of areas ranging from basic science to clinical to population research. These efforts are supported by a research infrastructure that includes a team of research nurses / nurse practitioners, research assistants, computing services and statistical consultants. Support for research endeavors by Bassett clinicians falls into several specific areas:
Resident Research is supported by the E. Donnall Thomas Program. Here residents work with Bassett senior staff mentors to pursue specific research questions that they have framed. Multiyear financial support is augmented by the research support services provided through the Research Institute.
Attending level research opportunities are possible. Clinicians who are interested in pursuing a specific research project may apply for the limited amount of Research Institute Clinician Projects support funding (see below). This consists of a 10% research time allotment being purchased from the clinical department and limited funding for supplies and research-related expenses. The Research Institute will provide substantial infrastructure support in the form of research nurse and research assistant time, computing services and statistical support. Productivity in terms of research abstracts, presentations and appropriate publications will be expected. Projects that can involve medical students and those that address clinical improvement topics will be of particular interest.
Clinicians seeking an ongoing involvement in research activities may apply to be Clinician Research Fellows within the Research Institute (see below). These individuals will receive 20% research support for a two year period. During this time Research Fellows are expected to develop research that can be competitive for subsequent ongoing external funding. Some fellows will be assisted in applying for young investigator and other types of support. Productivity in terms of abstracts, presentations, published manuscripts and grant applications will be expected. Projects that can involve medical students and those that address clinical improvement topics will be of particular interest.
Finally, the Research Institute will attempt to provide sufficient infrastructure to support clinicians interest in pursuing pharmaceutical trials whenever all parties agree that this is intellectually, clinically and financially appropriate.
Research Institute Clinician Projects
Research proposals submitted by Bassett attendings will be scored and a limited number of these one-year opportunities will be awarded each year. Potential applicants should review their intention to apply with their clinical chief. The initial awards will be made during the first quarter of the year and will continue as long as resources allow. Scoring of projects will be based upon the potential significance of the work, its feasibility as demonstrated by careful planning, detailed description of methods and anticipation of potential obstacles. Plans for data handling and analyses can be developed in consultation with the Research Institute's Statistics and Computing Center. Projects demonstrating opportunities for meaningful involvement of medical students and projects in the area of clinical performance improvement will be accorded special consideration. Applicants will receive feedback regarding their proposals and unsuccessful proposals may be resubmitted after appropriate modification.
For successful applicants, the Research Institute will purchase up to 10% time from the clinical department at the lower of the clinician's established salary or the current published NIH research salary maximum. Up to $7,000 will be available for supplies and related research expenses.
In exchange, the clinician researcher will be expected to work on the project on a regularly scheduled basis at Research Institute worksites. A detailed timeline will be developed and will be tracked to assure adequate progress. Clinician researchers will present their work in a shared Research Grand Rounds and will prepare posters for the annual research poster displays. It is expected that this work will lead to submission of abstracts to regional / national meetings and preparation of scientific manuscripts. Clinician researchers may rely upon Research Institute assistance in these efforts. Application is located to the left on navigation bar.
Clinician Research Fellows
Clinicians who envision an ongoing career in research may apply for a two-year fellowship as a member of the Research Institute. During this fellowship 20% of their time will be supported by the Research Institute. It is expected that this two-year period will provide the fellow with opportunities to develop research methodologies and preliminary results that can lead to external funding for ongoing research activities. When appropriate, clinician research fellows will be assisted in seeking young investigator and other similar awards to support additional training, mentoring and research activities. In most years one or two such positions will be awarded.
Each September applicants will submit a proposal for their research activities as well as a description of their plans for development of funding support beyond the two years as a fellow. Potential applicants should review their intention to apply with their clinical chief. Awards will be announced prior to the beginning of the next year and will continue for a two year period. Consideration of the likelihood for future state, federal or private funding of the applicant will figure prominently in decisions regarding clinician research fellowships. Applicants will receive feedback regarding their proposals and unsuccessful proposals may be resubmitted after appropriate modification.
For successful applicants, the Research Institute will purchase up to 20% time from the clinical department at the lower of the clinician's established salary or the current published NIH research salary maximum. Up to $8,000 will be available for supplies and related research expenses. The assistance of research nurses, research assistants, statistical and budgetary support staff will be provided to enhance the efficiency of the research fellow.
Fellows will be expected to participate in research activities as a member of the Research Institute. They will work on their project on a regularly scheduled basis at Research Institute worksites. A detailed timeline will be developed and will be tracked to assure adequate progress. Clinician fellows will present their work in a shared Research Grand Rounds and will prepare posters for the annual research poster displays. It is expected that this work will lead to submission of abstracts to regional / national meetings and preparation of scientific manuscripts. Research Fellows may rely upon Research Institute assistance in these efforts. Active pursuit of external support opportunities will be expected of the fellows and they will be provided with assistance in these efforts. Productivity will be assessed annually by noting project progress relative to the timeline, abstracts accepted, manuscripts submitted / accepted, grants submitted and scores on these grant proposals, and actual funding awarded.
