Surgical oncologists are involved in the diagnosis and treatment for cancer patients with specific expertise in breast, lung and endocrine surgery. Close collaboration with other medical specialties and with radiologists allow many patients to be diagnosed in an outpatient setting. Fine needle aspiration biopsies, endoscopic biopsies, thoracoscopy and laparoscopy are used to obtain tissue without requiring formal surgery. CT scanning, MRI, ultrasound, conventional x-rays and nuclear medicine scanning techniques are also utilized by surgeons.
